New images from Bob Odenkirk's upcoming film Nobody tease the ultra-violent fight to save his family. The Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul star is set to take on a new role when Nobody hits theaters this month. Written by John Wick scribe Derek Kolstad, the film will follow Odenkirk's Hutch Mansell, father and husband, as he fights to protect his family from a slew of criminals. Hutch is determined to prove himself to his family after hiding his strengths for so many years.
Odenkirk is normally known for his comedic roles, so Nobody represents something of a departure for the actor, though he's taken on a few dramatic roles in the past. Still, early trailers for the film show that the star will inject humor into the role. The action seems to be the centerpiece, though. Hutch will be dragged back into the world of assassins he thought he left behind and while the story is eerily akin to the John Wick franchise, Nobody looks to be an entirely different beast with similar franchise potential.
The film's mix of action and humor has already been teased, but new photos via Bloody Disgusting show just how far Hutch will be willing to go to protect his family. Some images show Hutch bloodied and bruised, while others show him interacting with his family prior to whatever causes him to become so beat up. The photos also give glimpses at some of Hutch's former associates, including an image of him meeting up with what looks to be a group of assassins and another where he seems to be gunning someone down with the gun inside a frozen food box.
While Nobody may seem to be repeating some typical action film tropes, with Odenkirk at the center anything is possible. The actor has garnered considerable awards attention for his turn in Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, going on to land a Screen Actors Guild win for his role in the latter. The man at the center seems to be where Nobody and John Wick will differ.
While the Keanu Reeves-led action franchise has its moments of humor, the films are mostly known for their straight-forward action plot. While seamless, there is some heart lacking there and Nobody could be the perfect way to make up for that. On top of Hutch having to protect his family, his levity in the face of some of the brutal violence will provide some more light-hearted moments that could create more of a balance in the film. Only time will tell if Odenkirk and the rest of the John Wick team can pull it off.
