Pokémon Legends: Arceus Is Game Freak's Best New Idea In Years

Pokémon Legends: Arceus looks to be Game Freak's most innovative game yet, as it's first open-world Pokémon game in 25 years. Fans have long argued this kind of game structure should be implemented, with many saying that it would give the series the breath of fresh air it desperately needs. Support for this idea only grew with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which similarly redefined the Zelda series via an open world. It inspired many subsequent games, like Genshin Impact and Immortals Fenyx Rising, so it's no surprise that Game Freak, one of the top developers for Nintendo systems, would lean into the idea.

Game Freak is taking the traditional Pokémon structure and flipping it on its head with Pokémon Legends: Arceus. In the game's two-minute debut trailer, the player character is seen roaming wide-open fields full of Pokémon. The battle system also looks different, with Pokémon attacking each other in the open. It's unconfirmed, but this could be the first Pokémon game with real-time battle gameplay.

Open-world gameplay is one of the most successful and popular designs in modern games, keeping many games relevant long after their release dates, if done well. Games like Skyrim, GTA 5, The Witcher 3, and Breath of the Wild continue to be played, streamed, and updated, either by developers or by community modders. With Pokémon being the highest-grossing media franchise everPokemon Legends: Arceus will likely only add to the series' achievements.

By giving players the freedom of exploration, Game Freak could better realize Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri's original vision of adventuring around the world, collecting creatures, and sharing with others. And if Pokémon Legends: Arceus throws out the turn-based battling system, the possibilities for new ideas and discoveries grow exponentially. Though it may be a risky departure from the formula it has developed over the past 25 years, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is Game Freak's best new idea in years.

The ability to observe Pokémon wandering around the environment could also create a unique experience in catching them. It's hard to say whether or not players will still have to battle Pokémon in order to catch them or if there is a Safari Zone-like mechanic that allows for different tactics, but it's something to look forward to.

There are many new things coming in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and all of them look to be improvements on the franchise's core gameplay. It's not a withdrawal from the norm but rather an evolution of what fans have come to know and love. Game Freak is pushing the envelope with this title, but it's a creative and fresh take for the series.
