Spider-Man: Miles Morales Includes Easter Egg Tribute To Deceased Artist

A newly-discovered Easter egg in 2020's Spider-Man: Miles Morales pays tribute to a recently-deceased young artist. Miles Morales is a short standalone sequel to Insomniac Games' 2018 wall-crawling adventure Marvel's Spider-Man, and it was met with similarly high praise by fans and critics. The open-world superhero game puts players in the shoes of Miles Morales as he adjusts to his superhuman powers and is left alone to defend New York by his mentor Peter Parker.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales, like its 2018 predecessor, is set in an incredibly faithful recreation of New York City. The iconic Marvel superhero location features multiple boroughs, large crowds and authentic graffiti art, but the city is not recreated at a one-to-one scale. One notable and unfortunate difference is Miles Morales' lack of the Chrysler Building, an iconic New York City skyscraper that was present in Marvel's Spider-Man. According to the game's developers the Chrysler Building could not be included in the game due to copyright issues, with the landmark changing owners between the release of Insomniac's two games. Another notable, and very much intentional, change to the city in Miles Morales acts as a touching tribute to Hollywood actor Chadwick Boseman. Boseman died of cancer in August 2020, and the Black Panther star's name can be found on a street sign for Midtown's 42nd street as a nod to his role in the Jackie Robinson biopic 42.

Reddit user u/huskytzu2 recently pointed out that a piece of graffiti in Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a tribute to deceased artist Qinniart. The artist, who was popular on Instagram, specialized in the use of both pencil and watercolor to create their art. On February 8, 2020 Qinniart died after a battle with cancer, with a family member sharing the news on her Instagram account. The in-game tribute, featured as graffiti near the Tinkerer's hideout, is extremely reminiscent of Qinniart's style.

Riddled with Easter eggs and tributes, Spider-Man: Miles Morales' New York City is considered by many to be one of the greatest open worlds in gaming. The game adds a fresh coat of paint to Marvel's Spider-Man's already impressive recreation of the iconic metropolis, with snow-capped skyscrapers and a vibrant overhaul of Harlem's design. The game's presence as a PlayStation 5 launch title also significantly improves the look and feel of the city, with realistic reflections on every window and more believable lighting.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales means a lot to fans of the character, as well as the gaming community as a whole. Inclusivity is on full display in the game, and tributes to several notable figures only increases the title's poignancy. Qinniart was not previously known to gamers all across the world, but Insomniac's touching tribute to the artist means that her legacy will always have a place in gaming history.
