SpongeBob SquarePants Meets Recess: 5 Friendships That Would Work (& 5 That Wouldn’t)

Recess and SpongeBob SquarePants are two of the most popular children's television shows of all time, with each series boasting some vibrant personalities. While SpongeBob took place under the sea, and Recess being set in a school, the two shows have clear similarities in the moral lessons that they teach viewers, all being done within a fun story that is filled with comedy.

But if the characters of Recess were able to float on down to Bikini Bottom, who would get along, and which characters would fight so much that they'd wind up in detention? Would TJ be able to deal with SpongeBob's energy, and could Squidward cope with Mikey's singing?

10 Would Work: Gretchen Grundler & Karen Plankton

When it comes to the intelligence within these shows, Gretchen Grundler and Karen Plankton are certainly near the top of the list. Gretchen may only be young, but she is wise beyond her years, she studies hard and has a real interest in learning new things.

That is why Karen Plankton would be an ideal friend for her, as she's also smart, and a great conversationalist. While she is a computer, that doesn't mean that Karen lacks personality. Both of these characters can be sassy when they want, and together they'd just have fun learning and doing experiments.

9 Wouldn't Work: King Bob & Patrick Star

King Bob is one of the supporting characters from Recess, and at times he can be a bully, giving nobody any respect within the playground. Bob likes to see himself as someone who is on top and in charge and he has no problem being rude to others, which would likely upset Patrick.

Patrick is the opposite of Bob, as he is the kindest soul in Bikini Bottom. While he might not be the most intelligent character, he is someone who is caring and simply wants to spend time with his friends, so someone as bossy as Bob wouldn't be a good friend to him.

8 Would Work: Ashley Spinelli & Sandy Cheeks

Ashley Spinelli and Sandy Cheeks are two of the lead characters within their shows, and they both bring a lot of fun to them. They're both loyal friends who will do anything for others if asked, and they provide plenty of comedy to the shows, which would lead to them working well as friends.

However, while they can be friendly characters, both Sandy and Ashley have no problem in showcasing their strength and getting physical either. They're strong female characters who will stand up to anybody, and together, that would make them excellent friends.

7 Wouldn't Work: Miss Finster & Gary

Miss Finster is a grouchy character who doesn't really like others. She has no interest in helping others or being nurturing to people and instead is just focused on doing her job, no matter how strict she has to be with people.

Miss Finster wouldn't have the patience to try and get to know and understand Gary, which is needed in order to be friends with him. Gary does have a fun personality, much like his owner, and that would only irritate Miss Finster even further.

6 Would Work: Principal Prickly & Mr. Krabs

While Principal Prickly is sometimes seen as the villain of Recess, that isn't really the case. He can be quite grouchy at times, but a lot of that is down to the position he's in as the Principal, which is very similar to Mr. Krabs, who is notorious for being cantankerous.

However, despite both of these characters being a little grumpy (which would work in their favor as friends), they're both soft on the inside. Ultimately, they're just trying to do the best by the businesses that they're involved with, having to deal with a lot of people that they find annoying at times as well.

5 Wouldn't Work: Miss Grotke & Mrs. Puff

Miss Grotke and Mrs. Puff might both be in the teaching profession, but that doesn't mean they'd work out as friends. While Miss Grotke teaches a class and Mrs. Puff teaches people to drive, that's where the similarities end for them.

Miss Grotke is kind and patient, being calm under pressure, always looking to get the best out of others in a reasonable manner. Whereas Mrs. Puff is known for having anger issues at times, particularly when dealing with SpongeBob, and their differing personalities would lead to this being a clash.

4 Would Work: Randall Weems & Plankton

Two villains from their respective shows would work out as great friends if they were to meet. Both Randall and Plankton are sneaky and cunning, hoping to gain any type of advantage over their rivals, no matter what the situation is.

They're both quite emotional characters as well, which is mainly because they don't get the attention and kindness that they hope to from many others. They might not be the most popular characters in their respective shows, but they'd be great friends to each other, with Randall being someone who would help Plankton as much as possible to get the Krabby Patty recipe.

3 Wouldn't Work: Gus Griswald & Larry The Lobster

Gus Griswald is the sweetest character from Recess and someone who can be emotional at times. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is chatty around his close friends, but in reality, Gus is shy and prefers to keep to himself, which is the opposite of Larry The Lobster.

Larry is always keen to show off as much as possible, letting the rest of Bikini Bottom know just how great he thinks he is. While he is a nice character, for the most part, he'd likely be too much for Gus, which is why they wouldn't get along.

2 Would Work: T.J. Detweiler & SpongeBob SquarePants

The two main characters of their respective shows would become great friends if they were put together, which is mainly due to their neverending energy. Both of these characters push out a huge amount of positivity, always looking to make others happy and go on as many adventures as possible.

While they sometimes make mistakes along the way and can be a little too much at times for some people, together they'd have a lot of fun. Both of them like to be busy at all times and always try their best to help others, with their personalities being so similar, there's no doubt they'd be friends.

1 Wouldn't Work: Vince Lasalle & Squidward Tentacles

Vince Lasalle is seen as one of the coolest kids in class at school, which is mainly due to his sporty and athletic background. However, he is someone who brings a lot of energy to everything that he does, and that is why Squidward wouldn't get along with him.

Squidward's relationship with SpongeBob himself is a great example of why they wouldn't get along. Squidward tolerates SpongeBob, and he would likely do the same with Vince. There would simply be too much energy and excitement for him, and with Vince being a keen talker and Squidward preferring to keep to himself, they simply wouldn't connect.
