Spring Baking Championship: Pros & Cons Of Moving Show to Discover+

The reality show Spring Baking Championship is one of the many series that have migrated from Hulu to the new Discover+ streaming service. While the new season is airing on the Food Network, with episodes appearing on Hulu, the earlier seasons will only appear on Discover+. There are advantages and drawbacks to this decision.

The Food Network made the transition on January 4, 2021. They are using the opportunity to introduce new material such as Cakealikes, a competition where bakers create celebrity replicas in cake form. Older content will also be displayed. Spring Baking Championship was a spinoff of the Holiday Baking Championship and continues to promote potential stars. Even people who don't win the main competition can show off their prowess. They may receive deals based on the publicity.

Six networks have contributed their shows to Discover+. This has led to more than 55,000 episodes available for viewers, during a time when many seek more material in the middle of stay-at-home orders and quarantines. TLC, the Travel Channel, and HGTV have joined forces with the Food Network for this endeavor.

One benefit is that Discover+ aims to collate similar shows together, to reduce the amount of search time required to find similar options. The platform wants to showcase beloved Food Network shows. On some occasions, after the viewer finishes up the content available, Hulu will automatically start a show that is not related to baking or reality television. This can reduce the viewer's pleasure, as they need to take time to manually input a search term related to their shows of choice.

Discover+ also has a lower subscription fee for monthly services, compared to the basic Hulu offering. The basic platform costs $4.99 per month with ads and $6.99 without ads. With Hulu, you have to pay $5.99 for the Basic Tier and 11.99 for the Premium Tier. Getting Hulu Live TV can bring the monthly fee up to 64.99, provided a viewer chooses all bells and whistles.

International viewers will benefit. Hulu is only available in the United States and Japan, and as of 2021, the service has no solid plans for expansion. In contrast, the Discover+ streaming service is available in 25 countries. This increases accessibility for Spring Baking Championship viewers.

The issue is that many loyal Hulu subscribers will not want to either switch their streaming services or add another expense to their monthly bills. Hulu has many other shows that it retains, including original content. Giving up shows such as Solar Opposites can be a difficult choice, especially when enticing teaser trailers for season 2 are out there. Viewers may opt for torrents and pirating, which takes away money from the show, producers, and the parent company.

Another concern is that Hulu did not notify users about this change, which isn't endearing viewers to Discover+. Instead, the new episodes of Spring Baking Championship appeared for season seven, without any archiving of the previous seasons. This may come as a shock to a viewer who was looking forward to the competition and interested in watching prior seasons. Hulu prioritizes advertising show premieres over genre preferences. We saw this with the new Britney Spears documentary. Time will tell if this move will prove fruitful for the Food Network and Spring Baking Championship in the long run. 2021 has been an odd year so far, with plenty of risks taken on new ventures.
