Star Wars: Rogue Squadron – Why Fans Are Skeptical (& Why They're Excited)

The next Star Wars movie to hit the silver screen will be Rogue Squadron. Announced for a December 2023 release at the recent Disney Investor Day, Rogue Squadron will be written and directed by Patty Jenkins and revolve around starfighter pilots earning their stripes in a galaxy torn apart by war. Jenkins’ hiring will make Rogue Squadron the first-ever Star Wars movie directed by a woman.

Jenkins has confirmed that it’ll follow an original story but will be taking inspiration from the rich history of novels, comics, and video games chronicling the adventures of these pilots. Some fans are excited about the new movie, but after many disappointments, some fans are also remaining skeptical.

10 Skeptical: Disney Has Yet To Make A Truly Great Star Wars Movie

Disney has yet to make a really great Star Wars movie that ranks alongside timeless classics like Return of the Jedi. The most popular one so far has been Rogue One, which suffered from underdeveloped characters and an aimless stretch in its middle act.

The sequel trilogy has its moments, but it’s ultimately an unsalvageable mess because the producers rushed into Episode VII without thinking everything through and the result was an Episode IX riddled with plot holes. Solo was a box office bomb.

9 Excited: Patty Jenkins Is A Fantastic Director

Patty Jenkins is a welcome addition to a growing roster of Star Wars directors that includes Taika Waititi and Robert Rodriguez. Over a decade after helming the powerful Aileen Wuornos biopic Monster, Jenkins quickly became one of the most sought-after blockbuster directors working today with her groundbreaking work on Wonder Woman.

Describing her approach to the Wonder Woman movies, Jenkins said she excised the word “cheesy” from her vocabulary, contrasting Marvel’s “bathos” with earnest sincerity. This style will be right at home in the Star Wars universe.

8 Skeptical: Wonder Woman 1984 Was Underwhelming

While Jenkins has more than proven her ability to direct a great movie, Wonder Woman 1984 showed that she’s not infallible. The Gal Gadot-starring sequel isn’t a bad movie — its escapist tone is a lot of fun — but it suffered from an overstuffed script with some muddled plotting.

Script problems are usually one of the main criticisms of Star Wars movies, especially in the Disney era, so this is an ominous sign for Rogue Squadron.

7 Excited: It’ll Have Plenty Of Space Battles

Since it’s set to revolve around starfighter pilots fighting evil in a galaxy far, far away, Rogue Squadron will have plenty of the space battles that Star Wars fans have come to expect.

J.J. Abrams kept most of his dogfights in the planets’ atmosphere. The Mandalorian’s space battles have been great, but they’re not on the big screen. The climactic set piece in Rogue One had a great space battle element above Scarif with dizzying camera movements — we need more exciting sequences like that in modern Star Wars movies, and Jenkins could provide them.

6 Skeptical: Disney Keeps Meddling In Star Wars Movies

Ever since meddling in the edit of Rogue One, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and the notorious executives at Disney haven’t left Star Wars filmmakers alone. After enforcing reshoots on Rogue One’s director Gareth Edwards, they fired Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from Solo in the middle of shooting and replaced them with Ron Howard, who patched over their vision with a generic, agreeable blockbuster.

Kennedy fired Colin Trevorrow from Episode IX and brought in J.J. Abrams. Trevorrow’s leaked script draft for Duel of the Fates is much more cohesive, inspired, and satisfying than anything in The Rise of Skywalker. Unless the studio can just leave Jenkins to do her job, Rogue Squadron is in as much trouble as its predecessors.

5 Excited: Starfighter Pilots Are Some Of The Coolest Characters In A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Rather than revolving around a Jedi or a bounty hunter or any other typical Star Wars protagonist, Rogue Squadron will revolve around starfighter pilots.

From Han Solo to Obi-Wan Kenobi to Poe Dameron, some of the coolest characters in the Star Wars universe have been starfighter pilots.

4 Skeptical: It Could Be Set In The Sequel Era

Not only is Lucasfilm refusing to reveal any specific plot details about Rogue Squadron; it’s also refusing to reveal its place on the Star Wars timeline. There was a “Rogue Squadron” in the Rebel Alliance, and there was also a “Rogue Squadron” in the New Republic.

So, this movie will either be about Rebel pilots fighting against Imperial forces or Resistance pilots fighting against the First Order. The sequel era is so inconsistent and out of whack in the context of the larger history that it’s not even worth exploring.

3 Excited: It’s About Original Characters

The Star Wars universe is in desperate need of original characters. Even The Mandalorian, once a haven of original characters, has now started giving a spotlight to fan favorites like Boba Fett and Ahsoka Tano.

While Rogue One introduced an ensemble of exciting fresh faces, the script failed to develop them enough to really make an impact. Rogue Squadron has the chance to introduce a bunch of great new characters.

2 Skeptical: Star Wars Fans Are On The Brink Of Fatigue

Although The Mandalorian is currently one of the most popular shows on the air, the fabled Star Wars fatigue is still a real risk following the soul-crushing disappointment of “Somehow, Palpatine returned,” and “Rey Skywalker.”

With a grand total of three Mandalorian spin-offs on the way and a bunch of other streaming content on top of that, Star Wars fans — casual fans, at least — are on the brink of fatigue.

1 Excited: The Mandalorian Has Kicked Off A Bright New Chapter Of Star Wars

Just when the box office failure of Solo and the bitter disappointment of the sequel trilogy had some fans wondering if the franchise still had a feasible future, The Mandalorian came along to cure everyone’s Star Wars fatigue.

Jon Favreau’s Disney+ hit has kicked off a bright new chapter in the Star Wars franchise, giving filmmakers artistic freedom and telling stories about characters that fans are actually interested in. Rogue Squadron will be the first movie of this exciting new era.
