Supergirl has shared new images offering the first look at its upcoming season 6. Originally premiering on CBS in October 2015, Supergirl joined the Arrowverse when it shifted to The CW for season 2. In the show, which is based on the DC Comics character created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, Melissa Benoist stars as the titular superheroine, Kara Danvers, who is Superman's cousin and one of the last surviving Kryptonians. Over the years, the show has taken part in several Arrowverse crossover events, including the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Recently, the series event spawned a spin-off, Superman & Lois, which premiered in February 2021. Supergirl's latest fifth season wrapped up last May, and now the show is gearing up to return for season 6.
Supergirl's fifth season ended an episode early with an explosive cliffhanger due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the US. In the makeshift finale, Kara joins hands with Lena after realizing Lex Luthor's plans. Dreamer, meanwhile, discovers that Brainiac is formulating a plan to stop Leviathan. So she supports him by infiltrating the headquarters. Later Kara ends the Unity Festival, while Brainiac finds himself nearly dead after sacrificing himself to stop Lex from using the Obsidian platform to indoctrinate half of the world into following his orders. Although Brainiac manages to subdue Rama Khan along with a few of his associates, he fails in stopping Lex from taking the container, which he plans to use with Lilian. Now, the consequences of the season 5 ending will play out in Supergirl's next season 6, the first-look images of which have already been set by The CW.
On Wednesday, TV Line released a bunch of first look photos offering the first look at Supergirl's upcoming season 6 premiere, "Rebirth". The images capture Benoist's superheroine and her team - David Harewood's Martian Manhunter, Chyler Leigh's Alex Danvers, Nicole Maines's Dreamer, and Jesse Rath's Brainiac-5 - in tense situations. A couple of pictures also feature Jon Cryer and Brenda Strong's scheming villains, Lex and Lilian Luthor, as they prepare for their decisive face-off against Supergirl. As confirmed earlier, Supergirl's upcoming sixth season will be the final iteration for the show before Danvers hangs up her cape for good. The new show will premiere on March 30, taking Superman & Lois' spot as it heads for a hiatus owing to COVID-19 issues production delays. Season 6 will then air its mid-season finale on May 18, before returning for the final episodes of the series in summer. At the moment, the storyline for season 6 isn't abundantly clear. But as per the synopsis of the season premiere, Lena will enlist the entire team - Alex, J’onn, Dreamer, Kelly, and Brainiac - for the final fight against Lex Luthor in the new show. But ultimately, Kara would realize that the only way to stop the villain is if she sacrifices herself.
Since the new images are largely stills from season 6's forthcoming premiere, they do not contain many hints outside of what has already been disclosed. Although they do offer an update on Brainiac 5's fate, who seems to have survived after the terrifying season 5 finale. Additionally, the new pictures also confirm that Kara and the gang are still figuring out a strategy to defeat Lex. On the other hand, Lex seems rather reassured, as he is enjoying wine with his accomplice Lilian. By the looks of the new photos, it appears that Supergirl's final season is going to be an intense, jumpy, and action-packed rollercoaster ride. Season 5 had left off on a high note. Now it remains to be seen how season 6 will pick up from that episode and progress the story to its climax.
