The Big Bang Theory: Bernadette's 5 Best Pieces Of Advice (& Her 5 Worst)

Since she joined The Big Bang Theory in season 3, Bernadette Maryann Rostenkowski-Wolowitz became an integral part of the show and the other characters' lives.  Howard's life, especially, changed for the better as he evolved from the perviest guy in the group to a decent father-figure when they got married.

Bernadette started out sweet and timid, but as the seasons went by, she began showing another side to her that was competitive, protective, and fierce.  Whether she was displaying her sweet side or the opposite, Bernadette was never short on wise words for her friends. Sometimes these were said with love and other times they were laced with sarcasm, but either way, she always had something to say when her friends needed advice.

10 Best: Cut The Apron Strings

Howard's unhealthy attachment to his mother was a long-running joke on The Big Bang Theory. Even though he was an engineer at Caltech, he was still living with her in his childhood home, where she'd cook for him, do his laundry, and even take him to the dentist like he was a child and not a full-grown man.

From the time they were dating and even a little while after they were married, Bernadette kept suggesting that he move out from his mother's home and move in with her instead. Thanks to her, Howard became a little more independent over time.

9 Worst: Explore Other Options

While Amy and Sheldon's relationship was one of the most loved by the time The Big Bang Theory ended, its development was the slowest of them all. Sheldon's social skills, or lack thereof, were the main reason for this as it took him much longer to adjust to change and advance to the next level of any relationship, romantic or otherwise.

Amy was patient with Sheldon, not pushing him farther than he wanted to go or pressuring him into doing something she wanted. On one occasion, Bernadette and Amy were at a science event away from everyone else and two men bought them drinks at the bar. Bernadette openly suggested that Amy should allow and welcome the advances of the men, subtly suggesting her relationship with Sheldon was going nowhere.

8 Best: No To Marriages Of Convenience

Raj's struggles with love were no secret, from his troubles talking to women to his struggle maintaining a relationship. After resisting arranged matches from his parents, he finally gave in in season 5's "The Transporter Malfunction." They set him up with Lakshmi and he went out on a date with her, accompanied by Howard and Bernadette.

At the end of the date, Lakshmi revealed that she would be happy to marry him to get her parents off her back and keep them from finding out that she was a lesbian. Raj was actually considering it because he didn't believe he'd ever find anyone who would love him but Bernadette, along with Howard, talked him out of it, assuring him that someday he would find someone who loved him and wanted to marry him.

7 Worst: Sheldon Talking Sensitive Issues

Sometimes, the best intentions go awry, and such was the case when Bernadette told Sheldon to talk to Alex--Sheldon's personal assistant--about flirting with Leonard in "The Egg Salad Equivalency."

Considering Sheldon's terrible social skills and inability to recognize inappropriate speech, advising him to talk to Alex about such a delicate matter was a really bad idea. True to his nature, Sheldon said the wrong thing, and made Alex more uncomfortable instead, resulting in the Human Resources Department calling him in after she reported him.

6 Best: Bury The Hatchet

For most of the show, Sheldon taunted Howard for not having a doctorate like him and the other guys of their squad. It got even worse when Bernadette also got a Ph.D. As a result, Howard gave back as good as he got and mocked Sheldon over his lack of social skills.

Bernadette explained to him that due to his limited understanding of human emotions, it was unfair for Howard to retaliate against Sheldon for saying things he didn't really know were wrong or hurtful. Later in "The Friendship Turbulence," she advised him to make peace with Sheldon, which led to Howard taking him on a tour of NASA so they could bond.

5 Worst: Marrying For The Wrong Reasons

During the finale of season 6, Leonard was picked to join a team of scientists working on a project for Stephen Hawking on a boat in the middle of the North Sea. At the time, Leonard and Penny's on-again-off-again relationship was on and she was stressing about being away from him for the 4-month duration of the trip.

While the group was having dinner at Sheldon and Leonard's apartment and planning a farewell party for Leonard, Bernadette mentioned that marrying Howard before he left for space made their time apart less painful and suggested that Penny and Leonard do the same. Considering the tumultuous nature of Leonard and Penny's relationship, them getting married was definitely a bad idea, especially if it wasn't for the right reasons.

4 Best: Rein In The Space Talk

Howard's trip to the International Space Station was one of his biggest accomplishments and naturally, he was proud of it. When he got back, he told everyone about his trip, as anyone would do about an achievement as big as that, but he took it too far. Sheldon and Leonard even joked about how he could turn any subject into a conversation about how he was in space.

Needless to say, his friends and everyone else grew tired of him making every conversation about his space trip. Eventually, Bernadette talked to him about it and asked him to reign it in a little. He got angry at first, but understood in the end and took her advice.

3 Worst: Date For Looks

During the early stages of their friendship, Penny, Amy, and Bernadette bumped into Zack--Penny's ex-boyfriend--while they were out at a bar. After introductions, Bernadette commented on how good-looking Zack was and asked Penny why they broke up.

Penny explained that Zack didn't really challenge her much on an intellectual level. Bernadette's advice on that? Why not fool around with him and then listen to NPR? A few episodes later, Penny was back with Zack, which--as she told Leonard--was just so she wouldn't be alone on New Year's. So, it seemed she might have taken Bernadette's terrible advice to heart.

2 Best: The Space Intervention

In "The Table Polarization," Howard got a second chance to go back to the space station to make some repairs on the technology he'd installed. He was thrilled about it and told Bernadette as much. She was skeptical about it on account of the way Howard complained during his first trip.

She called her father, Raj, and Massimino--one of the astronauts Howard had traveled with before--to talk to him about it. With their help, she convinced Howard to re-think his decision to go back to space, because he was miserable the whole time he was there first time around.

1 Worst: Not Wanting Kids Is Silly

In "The Procreation Calculation," Penny realized she might not want to have kids and confided in Bernadette about it. Later, she told Leonard, who got upset that she made such a huge decision about their life on her own.

Bernadette brushed off Penny's words and told her it was silly to say she didn't want kids. And when Penny continued to insist that her feelings on the matter were valid, Bernadette gave an example of herself and how she used to say she didn't want kids but ended up having and loving them, completely dismissing how Penny felt in a condescending manner.
