Warning: potential spoilers ahead for The Flash #768
The Flash's final race will strip him of his powers, as revealed in a new preview from DC Comics. Wally West has had a rough time as the Flash lately and he has taken on lots of responsibility. Now, all of that has weighed on him enough to where he feels prepared to hang up the mantle - and it could happen sooner than fans expected.
Wally West and Barry Allen were set to take on new roles coming into Infinite Frontier. After being integral to different comic events and continuity shifts, the Flash duo was going to change things up in a way that seemed like definite progress for both characters. Instead, they are going in new, unexpected directions. Barry was set to become the Flash of the Omniverse. He was going to be a sort of liaison, while Wally would take on the responsibilities of being Central City's Flash. Wally would have been the speedster hero that the Flash is known for being.
The latest preview from DC Comics for The Flash #768 - written by Jeremy Adams with art by Brandon Peterson, Marco Santucci, and David Lafuente - reveals a completely different future than what was expected coming out of Dark Nights: Death Metal and Future State. Wally's now planning to hang up his suit - permanently. What was supposed to be a promotion of sorts has become a burden that he's not ready to bear. The next issue will have Wally West's Flash racing one last time - to get rid of his powers:

- The retirement of Wally West begins! After the events spanning from DC Universe: Rebirth to Heroes in Crisis to Dark Nights: Death Metal, the former Kid Flash decides to call it quits. But the current Flash needs his former partner now more than ever. As fallout from Infinite Frontier hits the Flash, Barry Allen and Wally West must confront the past by way of a Justice League led by Green Arrow.
This seems to be a big reversal of expectation and an almost disappointing one at that. However, as this preview says, the world can change in the blink of an eye. The Flash is not a stranger to losing connection to the Speed Force or losing powers - it has happened before. This time, it's by choice. The reversal of roles now leaves readers with several questions. How does this affect the job that Barry was set to play in the Omniverse? Who is ultimately going to replace Wally? Will the race even fully occur and result in a powerless Wally? Could this race be what kicks off some of the events seen in Future State or will it result in shaping a new future altogether? Barry Allen said in Future State that something in the Speed Force had affected Wally - could it be a result of this race? Does Wally get his powers back - if so, how? Either way, it doesn't seem like readers know what direction DC is turning in.
DC appears to be laying the groundwork for a long story with a lot of different possibilities. Future State was just one possible future - not an unavoidable guarantee. However, this does come across as somewhat disappointing since Wally finally seemed to be settling in for the better. Instead, the events he has gone through have brought him to a point where he needs a break. This would be the perfect opportunity to bring Kid Quick - DC's newest Flash - to the forefront. Jess Chambers is a non-binary genderfluid speedster who was an integral part of the Future State event. Though it was said that they would become a mainstay in the Flash family, this may happen rather quickly. Regardless of what DC does next, this upcoming issue should have immediate results for this race and set the stage for a new direction. The effects are sure to be felt long-term and there is no more fitting way for a Flash to retire than by running one last race - particularly one that is a personal choice to run, in Wally's case.
