The Vampire Diaries is one of the most successful TV shows in the history of The CW. And, given that its fictional universe was so intriguing and unique, it comes as no surprise that the show eventually earned its own spinoff, a series focusing on the Mikaelson family called The Originals.
The Originals went out of its way to distinguish itself from its parent series right off the bat, but its connection to Mystic Falls and all of its characters was undeniable, and crossovers were inevitable. But, which crossovers were fans disappointed by, and which characters were they always hoping would show up in New Orleans?
10 Wish Were In The Originals: Kai Parker
In all fairness, there really isn't a good excuse for Kai Parker to sojourn out to New Orleans or appear on The Originals (although for a siphoner, New Orleans is probably like one giant magical battery).
However, many fans felt like Kai was the best villain since Klaus Mikaelson, and it would have been amazing to see the two of them come face to face. Plus, Kai could have caused a lot of fun trouble in NOLA.
9 Wish Had Been Cut: Matt Donovan
Poor Matty blue blue. He may serve as the human eyes and ears in the world of The Vampire Diaries, but in truth, he's just not a very interesting character.
He made a very brief crossover onto The Originals at one point, but his appearance really served no purpose for the plot, and it feels like he was just thrown into the show so that they could say they had a crossover.
8 Wish Were In The Originals: Damon Salvatore
If ever there was a Vampire Diaries character who would have fit right into New Orleans, it's Damon Salvatore. Obviously Damon has never been close to any members of the Mikaelson family, but things always got a little spicy whenever Damon and Klaus were together.
Not to mention, Damon is undeniably the most popular character in the entire Vampire Diaries universe, so it's a little strange that The Originals never took advantage of that.
7 Wish Had Been Cut: Stefan Salvatore
While fans were always enthusiastic about the idea of crossovers between The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, unfortunately, they often didn't live up to the hopes of the audience. Such is the case with Stefan's appearance.
He goes to New Orleans seeking help with his situation with Rayna Cruz, but it really seemed like an excuse for Stefan and Klaus to have an awkward conversation about Caroline that ultimately went nowhere.
6 Wish Were In The Originals: Bonnie Bennett
Bonnie Bennett is one of those characters whose crossover to The Originals just would have made sense. After all, she's arguably the most powerful witch alive, and New Orleans is a veritable hotbed of witch activity.
Granted, she was never a friend of the Mikaelsons, but it would have been very interesting to see her thrown into the mix, either to face off against the NOLA witches or to learn from them.
5 Wish Had Been Cut: Tyler Lockwood
Tyler Lockwood was the first TVD character to make an appearance on The Originals, and it's not hard to see why. He and Klaus had an enormous amount of unfinished business, and he and Hayley did as well.
However, his actual appearance fell flat, because for the most part, it seemed like he was there to explain how the baby could make hybrids, bafflingly explain that Klaus was entirely responsible for everything bad that happened in his life (although Hayley played a huge part in it), and disappear.
4 Wish Were In The Originals: Katherine Pierce
Although Elijah fell for Hayley pretty much the minute they met, he was hot and heavy with Katherine right before he left for New Orleans.
So, if The Originals was ever going to have Nina Dobrev cross over to their show, they really should have had her appear as Katherine and resolve the relationship that she had with Elijah. Honestly, that would have been much more interesting than Tatia's appearance.
3 Wish Had Been Cut: Tatia
Technically this might not count as a crossover, as Tatia only ever actually appeared in the flesh on The Originals, but her origin story began on The Vampire Diaries.
And, while seeing the backstory of Klaus and Elijah's love triangle with her, as well as the creation of the Original family, would have been interesting, the flashbacks in one episode of The Originals just wasn't enough time to do that story justice.
2 Wish Were In The Originals: Caroline Forbes
There are plenty of characters that fans wish had appeared on The Originals, but no crossover was more anticipated and hoped for than Caroline's.
Klaus left Mystic Falls with a lot of unresolved storylines, but none of them were bigger or more beloved by fans than his relationship with Caroline, and although Caroline did eventually show up on The Originals, it was way too little, way too late.
1 Wish Had Been Cut: Caroline Forbes
The way that The Vampire Diaries and The Originals handled the relationship between Klaus and Caroline was odd. They teased a potential crossover for years, but nothing ever really happened until the final season of The Originals.
But to be honest, after all the epic buildup that their relationship had, it really ended on the peak of its story and the show didn't resolve it until half a decade later. It just didn't make sense at that point.
