A Valheim fan has created an epic comic book cover based on the procedurally generated Viking survival game. Since its release in February, the indie sensation has had a meteoric rise to the top of Steam’s sales charts. With over 5 million people now owning the game and an “overwhelmingly positive” rating, the game’s hype and popularity are as mythical as the enemies players face in their adventures.
The debut title of Iron Gate AB, published by Satisfactory and Goat Simulator’s Coffee Stain, Valheim released on February 2, 2020, and it has already broken records on Steam. It is set in the tenth realm of Norse mythology, where players can explore procedurally generated worlds. Servers host up to 10 players in co-op PvE gameplay. Players can travel to different lands in longboats, and create armor and weapons to fight different enemies.
Reddit user u/alexkineticflow, real name Alex Chen, posted their comic book poster on the Valheim subreddit with a description saying, “after hundreds of hours and so many epic moments, I was inspired to do this piece. Thank you for an amazing game! Can’t wait for release.” The image features weapons and armor that players can craft wielded by two Viking warriors standing upon a pile of roots and skulls. Fellow Redditors insisted that the artist sell prints of the poster, while others think that u/alexkineticflow should create a full comic.
The poster’s initial viewing inspires similarities to The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim’s promotional art of the Dragonborn with a dragon soul swirling around the hero. It is grandiose and ominous, a feeling well captured within the game itself. It's not hard to see why others would love to see more of this world fleshed out in a comic series. The poster could definitely work as a potential phone wallpaper too.
Valheim is the latest in a chain of indie games to hit massive fame and success. Last year, Among Us became one of the biggest crazes during the pandemic, prompting the developer to stop work on the planned sequel and expand the original. Fall Guys took over the PlayStation Network, and its success caused Epic to purchase its developer Mediatonic. Games as ambitious as Valheim and these others see incredible success where major AAA games are falling short of their premise. A shift is beginning to show itself in the gaming industry as each successful and innovative game from independent developers paves a path away from the older, more experienced developers.
