Batman's New Partner Ghost-Maker is Building DC's Next Legend

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman #107, "Ghost-Maker Chapter One."

In the latest issue of Batmanthe Dark Knight's new ally Ghost-Maker is building his own legend in the world of DC Comics. Having received his training at the same time as Batman, Ghost-Maker has operated as an international vigilante dedicated to honing his craft and to the art of vigilantism itself. While they started as friends, Bruce and Ghost-Maker's bond soon became a rivalry filled with animosity. However, the two vigilantes have since buried the hatchet and Ghost-Maker is helping Batman in Gotham City for the time being. Now, a new backup story reveals a look into Ghost-Maker's past, and the legend he's crafted for himself.

While the main story of Batman #107 comes from writer James Tynion IV and artist Jorge Jimenez, Tyion pulls double duty with this new Ghost-Maker back-up story, working with artist Ricardo Lopez Ortiz. In the new tale, the always masked and mysterious Ghost-Maker is preparing to air-drop down to Devil Skull Island, after spending some time with more than one lover in his bed during the flight there. He tells his recent companions to make sure they let people know that he's not a man, he's a legend, encouraging them to embellish their stories about him as he suits up and connects with his advanced AI, known as Icon.

After touching down on the menacing island, it's revealed that the Ghost-Maker's new mission is all a trap set by the villain Madame Midas, the richest woman on the planet. She's furious that Ghost-Maker's recent actions have cost her over $118 billion. She's also joined by the Instigator, the otherworldly horror known as Razorline, the assassin robot Kid Kawaii, as well as the genetically engineered telekinetic named Brainstorm. While they've all come together to pool their knowledge about the Ghost-Maker so they can finally kill him, Midas reveals that she leaked their information and shared whereabouts to the legendary Ghost-Maker, leading him right to them, all of which was certainly a surprise to the other assembled villains.

While it's pretty cool that Ghost-Maker has his own rogues gallery like Batman, one has to wonder if they'll be sticking around all that long. Ghost-Maker has already proven in past Batman comics that he has no problem dispensing lethal justice and killing criminals (though he has agreed to follow Batman's rules while in Gotham). While Midas has set up all kinds of threats and dangers to kill Ghost-Maker (like robot laser tigers), the vigilante simply sees them as a new challenge for him to conquer, so confident in his abilities that he practically views his crusade against criminals like a game (the key distinction between himself and Batman).

As the Ghost-Maker's legend in the DC Universe continues to be built in these back-up stories, it's going to be very interesting to see what else might be learned about his past. Much of his personal life is still a mystery, and not even his true face and name have been revealed thus far. In any case, Ghost-Maker's upcoming battle is sure to be massive when he takes on five of his rouges simultaneously in future issues of Batman from DC Comics.
