California Movie Theaters Can Open At Full Capacity On June 15

California movie theaters will soon be able to open fully starting in June. After a year of COVID-19 restrictions in place across the country, movie theaters are slowly starting to get back into the swing of things as more films start opening up. With no certainty on when theaters would be able to open at full capacity, some films like Black Widow delayed themselves later into the summer to give themselves a better box-office chance, and now it appears there is a date in sight.

According to Deadline, California Governor, Gavin Newsom, announced that California is lifting restrictions on June 15, 2021, which will allow movie theaters to open at full capacity. However, a mask mandate will still be in place. The date will mark eight weeks from when vaccines will open up to all California residents. Newsom cites that while cases of COVID-19 have spiked across the country, California has seen a decrease in positive cases and the state has surpassed over 20 million vaccines administered. Newsom said:

We’ll be opening up on June 15, this economy…business as usual...We are announcing now that on June 15 we will be getting rid of the colored [reopening] tiers.

Opening movie theaters in California will help revitalize the box office after a year of theaters being shut down completely or operating at limited capacity with a few major marquee titles. Even at just 25% capacity, Los Angeles and New York helped Godzilla vs. Kong deliver the biggest opening during the pandemic, and as theaters expand their capacity, it could help other upcoming releases such as Mortal Kombat and Cruella. F9 will now open two weeks after California theaters begin operating at full capacity, which could help mark a return to a robust summer movie season and an end to major film delays.
