The new documentary series Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil showcases the people who mean the most to Demi, including her head of security and chief of staff, Max Lea. The YouTube original series is an honest look into the ups and downs of Demi's life and career. It captures everything from her struggle with an eating disorder to her almost-deadly overdose in 2018. In the series, Demi described Max as "someone that protects me like his own daughter." So, who is the man that Demi trusts with her life? Here's what we know about security head Max Lea.
In episode two of Dancing with the Devil, Demi's former assistant, Jordan Jackson, recalls working with Max Lea to save Demi's life. Jordan went to pick up Demi for a doctor's appointment when she found her in bed, unable to wake up. Jordan's first thought was to call Max Lea, Demi's head of security. Max told his staff to go into Demi's room and tell him what they saw, and he instructed them to put her on her side and clear her throat. Thanks to Max and Jordan, an ambulance was able to reach Demi in time to save her life. Max and Demi sat together while he told his side of the story, exhibiting the close bond that they share.
Max Lea is a seasoned security expert. Before working with Demi Lovato, he was Brittany Spears' personal security specialist on her Femme Fatale tour in 2011. After that, he started his own security company called Black Box Security (via Newsweek). After four years he ventured into music management and became chief of staff at a company called Philymack. In 2016, he founded Safehouse Security Solutions to provide VIP security for stars, including current judge on The Voice Nick Jonas, and Joe Jonas's band DNCE. By the time he started working with Demi, he had added Safehouse Transport to his roster, which combines protection and personal transport services. He is originally from Australia and provided security for hotels like the Shangri-La in Sydney.
In 2018, Max made the news after Demi detailed a prank that some fans felt went too far. Demi told about the time she hired a "woman of the night" to visit Max at his hotel room unannounced when they were staying in Las Vegas. Max "freaked the f--k out," according to Demi. Fans at the time found it distasteful and inappropriate, and Demi later apologized. It didn't seem to tarnish their relationship though. In Dancing with the Devil the director asked Max if he ever thought about giving up on Demi. He answered, "I couldn't, and no, not once." Max doesn't usually post his clients on Instagram, but he's made a few exceptions for Demi, including the sweet post below where he wrote "We’ve been through it! And back again. Love you D."
Max and Demi have a special bond that may be showcased even more in upcoming episodes of Dancing with the Devil. He has kept her safe while providing her with the love and support that so many have denied her. While many of Demi's staff have had to move on, including her former choreographer, Max has stayed through thick and thin. In many ways, Max Lea has been a life-saver for Demi, literally.
