Daredevil's Forgotten Power Just Saved His Life | Screen Rant

Spoiler warning for Daredevil #29!

An attempt to end Daredevil’s life fails because of an underappreciated power he possesses. Surviving prison will require the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen to use every ounce of strength and all of his abilities, including abilities that fans don't see very often.

Matt Murdock is serving time as Daredevil after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter in Daredevil #24. As expected, incarceration hasn’t been easy for the vigilante. His heightened senses in that environment make sleeping nearly impossible and make it hard to ignore the typical violence of prison life. Daredevil has been involved in altercations with other prisoners, and the King in Black’s invasion didn't make life any easier for him. Luckily, he has the skills to survive.

One of Matt Murdock’s overlooked powers helps Daredevil survive an assassination attempt while behind bars. In Daredevil #29 by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto, the superhuman sense that saves Matt Murdock’s life is his heightened sense of taste. Daredevil detects poison in his food after a single bite, thanks to his ability to decipher the various ingredients of anything he eats. Not only does his ability prevent him from consuming any more of the food, detecting the poison alerts him to the fact that someone wants him dead. That warning proves crucial, as he immediately excuses himself from the table, however, a mob of inmates approach Daredevil to finish the job the poison started.

Daredevil has always been one of the most resourceful and relentless vigilantes in Marvel’s roster. His physical abilities help him detect the poison, but he is also able to access the training he received from Stick to meditate and regulate his body’s functions. Daredevil is able to level out his heart rate and heal himself from the damage the poison caused. The meditation also serves the second purpose of unnerving his impending assailants. Their wariness garners him some time to heal his body well enough to have a fighting chance against the murderous mob of inmates. Daredevil’s superhuman radar hearing is the power that gets showcased the most, but using taste in combination with his training saves his life, at least for a few moments.

The hero’s first appearance in Daredevil #1 described his enhanced taste by explaining he could determine how many grains of salt were on a pretzel. Being able to detect poison is a much higher stakes display of that ability’s potential. Daredevil #29 concludes with Matt Murdock unable to fend off the army of inmates sent to kill him. Although the death of Daredevil is being reported, if he has indeed drawn his last breath, thanks to his superhuman taste, it wasn’t because of poisoned food.
