DCEU: 10 Announced Projects That Likely Won't Get Made

Marvel has been known to take huge risks when it comes to developing movies about lesser-known characters, whether it’s about a tree and a talking raccoon or an average guy who can shrink down to the size of an ant. However, DC isn’t as quick to pull the trigger on the more risky projects.

They’re almost the opposite, as they’ve already canceled New Gods and The Trench. It doesn’t leave fans with much confidence about other projects that have been in development for years on end. Warner Bros. is sitting on a wealth of ideas and concepts that they don't seem eager to use, and we're willing to bet that even some of their more promising projects that have already been announced will eventually be totally scrapped.

10 Green Lantern Corps

Green Lantern Corps is the first of many projects announced back in 2014 as part of DC’s master plan, but a lot has changed since then. However, fans will at least get to see the project in some form, considering it’s becoming an HBO Max series, but that just makes it even less likely that it’ll ever become a movie and feature on the big screen. Though there still isn’t a lot known about the HBO show, it seems like the series is a replacement or even a downgrade from the movie project.

9 Batgirl

Being one of the movies that fans are most excited to see, it’s a wonder why a Batgirl movie isn’t being fast-tracked by Warner Bros., and it’s even more of a surprise that, after Joss Whedon dropped out, the studio has been in no rush to replace him.

Ben Affleck’s Batman screenplay included Batgirl, as there was even a scene in which she fights Deathstroke, but, as that movie now isn’t happening either, it has left the superhero movie up in the air. It would have been the perfect introduction to Batgirl and likely would have served as a perfect transition into a solo movie.

8 Cyborg

Though Ray Fisher has vowed to never work with Warner Bros. again and Cyborg has been written out of the upcoming Flash movie, the thought of a solo Cyborg movie seems unlikely now more than ever.

However, even though Fisher won’t depict the character in the future, it doesn’t mean another actor can’t carry the torch. Cyborg was a fascinating character in Justice League, and he was made even more interesting in the newly released Zack Snyder’s Justice League, so it’d be a shame if the Cyborg movie continued to be left dormant.

7 Jared Leto’s Joker

There were so many big plans with Jared Leto’s portrayal of the joker, but he was, perhaps unjustly, sidelined after the polarizing reception that his depiction received from fans. His strange tattoos and gangster rapper-like attitude was a strange route to take the character down, which led to his own movie being left in limbo.

However, character was redeemed in the epilogue of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and there are so many reasons why Leto should get his own movie, so there's still a small chance that it could happen.

6 Joker / Harley Quinn

Along with a standalone Joker movie, there were big plans for a Joker and Harley Quinn team-up movie following 2016’s Suicide Squad. However, though there have been no updates and it hasn’t officially been canceled, given that it was explained that Harley broke up with Joker in some brief exposition in Birds of Prey, it seems like the film is all but canned.

It’s a shame, as Robbie’s portrayal of Harley was well-received, and her relationship with Joker was one of the most interesting things about Suicide Squad.

5 Blackhawk

Steven Spielberg has never directed a superhero movie before, even though he did come close to directing Superman. However, that may be about to change. Blackhawk, Spielberg’s favorite comic book hero, is one of the DC movies currently in development, and the famous director is attached to it.

But that has been the case for years now, and, as the celebrated director has had his name attached to movies that ended up getting directed by other people so many times over the past 40 years, it’s unlikely that he’ll remain a part of the project, and it's increasingly unlikely that the movie will see the light of day at all.

4 Supergirl

When it comes to heroes whose names begin with ‘super,’ all of their projects look like they’re in doubt. With J.J. Abrams directing a new  Superman movie, it’s unknown whether or not Henry Cavill will be playing Clark Kent again, and then there’s Supergirl.

The movie has been in development for a long time now, and there has barely been a single update in years. But, given how successful the television series is on The CW, it could be a missed opportunity.

3 Justice League Dark

It could be argued that Zack Snyder’s Justice League was dark enough, but Justice League Dark is a completely different entity, with a different line-up of heroes that includes Constantine and Swamp Thing.

It seems like Warner Bros. are so close to throwing in the towel on the project, as so many well-known writers and directors have been attached only to drop out months later. Guillermo Del Toro was attached to pen the script before dropping out, and The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman was brought in to direct in 2016 until he dropped out the following year, as well.

2 Nightwing

Dick Grayson, who was a former Robin and went on to take on the Nightwing moniker in his later years, is such a beloved character amongst fans of the comic books. Despite being massively in demand with fans speculating over how the character could be introduced in future movies, the Nightwing project has, unfortunately, laid dormant for years now.

The last update on the project was almost three years ago, when Lewis Tan reportedly discussed the project with DC, but since then, it has been nothing but tumbleweeds in the wind.

1 Gotham City Sirens

Gotham City Sirens has been on hold for over a year now. As Warner Bros. wanted to develop Birds of Prey first. But, given the negative receptions regarding both Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, it’s possible that the studio could get rid of the movie altogether, as it’s a case of diminishing returns.

However, Margot Robbie still wants to do it, and, as the movie would introduce Catwoman and Poison Ivy and see the three of them team up together, it’s one of the most interesting movies in development.
