Forget Batgirl, Barbara Gordon's New Costume Changes Everything

Spoilers for Batman: Urban Legends #2 ahead!

Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl, has returned to the role of Oracle, but she still needs cool gadgets to get the job done, and in the story “Ghost in the Machine” in Batman: Urban Legends #2, readers get to see her new outfit in action.

Although she is best known as Batgirl, for a stretch of time the character went by the name Oracle. After being shot and paralyzed by the Joker in The Killing Joke, Barbara put her information science training to use and became Oracle, functioning as the eye in the sky for not only Batman, but the DC Universe as a whole. In a controversial move, her mobility was restored during the New 52 era, and she returned to active duty as Batgirl. Recently, after the events of the Joker War, she retired from being Batgirl once again, with Cassandra Cain taking over the role. But that has not slowed Barbara down one bit and she's now returned to being Oracle.

The story, written by Cecil Castellucci with art and colors by Marguerite Sauvage, opens with Oracle on the trail of a master computer hacker named Vi. The two have been playing a technological cat and mouse game all over the dark web, and now Oracle realizes she may need to go mobile if she wants to stop Vi, so she designs a uniform to help. Resembling a green tracksuit, the uniform comes loaded with various communication devices such as a “holographic sleeve smartphone” as well as cables in the uniform’s seams that allow her to plug into computers. Her glasses are smart glasses and she carries a mobile server farm in her bag. There are also weapons: the suit comes with a telescoping antenna that can be used as a cane if needed. With these upgrades, Oracle is able to go out and investigate Vi’s actions firsthand. She is able to use the various communication devices to coordinate with Batgirl, Nightwing and Spoiler to help her find Vi. And she is able to use the tech to defeat Vi at the end of the story.

Oracle’s new suit takes the character to another level. It is loaded with numerous bells and whistles, all of which help her function as the DC Universe’s premiere information broker, and the best part of the suit is that it's discreet. By making it look like a regular track suit, she is ensuring she can work in public without her enemies knowing. It is the perfect mix of style and function.

While she is no longer Batgirl, Oracle still has the adventuring bug, and now she has a new uniform that allows her to do just that. Batman: Urban Legends #2 is available in stores and on digital  platforms now.
