James Gunn Hints At “Huge” Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be huge, director James Gunn teases. The third installment of the cosmic-based series in the MCU has been significantly delayed for a couple of reasons, mainly because of the brief firing and eventual rehiring of Gunn. Now, however, work is quietly in full swing at Marvel Studios with the filmmaker providing a small but exciting update.

The story for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has long been locked, even before Gunn was booted out of the job. Official plot details have been scant at this point, but between what happened in Avengers: Endgame and other revelations about the rag-tag heroes, there are some plot points that are expected to play out in the third film. That includes the search for 2014 Gamora whose whereabouts remain unknown after Thanos was defeated. Meanwhile, Rocket will also be a primary focus in the movie as his tragic backstory will supposedly be explored.

On the heels of the release of the trailers for Black Widow and Disney+'s Loki, one fan asked Gunn on Twitter if he can offer any information about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director can't obviously divulge any spoilers, but he says that artists are currently coming up with designs for new worlds and aliens. In the end, he emphasizes the much-anticipated blockbuster will be huge. Check out his complete reply below:

No official word yet when exactly Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released, but it's tentatively scheduled to hit theaters in 2023. Considering how much hype it has going, chances are that it will take Marvel Studios' annual April/May release that's typically reserved for an Avengers or ensemble film. But since the MCU is focusing on standalone movies, something like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thor: Love and Thunder (slated for May 2022) can fill that void. The filmmaker has confirmed, however, that production will begin later this year, which tracks with his most recent revelation about the film essentially being in pre-production. In any case, based on its predecessors, the threequel will be VFX heavy, so it would need more time to polish its effects after principal photography.

As exciting as this update from Gunn is, the Guardians of the Galaxy films, much like a lot of other MCU installments, really thrive with character work. So while it sounds like it will cover more and new parts of the universe, people are mostly interested in what's next for cosmic heroes. Gunn, who's been the primary creative force behind the Marvel Studios sub-franchise, has come up with some of the most poignant moments in the universe, and since he purportedly cried a lot while writing the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, expect a very emotional narrative.
