King in Black's Biggest Plot Hole is Finally Explained

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Carnage: Black, White, and Blood #2, "Carnage Shark"

In the latest issue of Carnage: Black, White, and Blood, Marvel has revealed a big plot hole from their large King in Black event: where was Carnage? Seeing as how the symbiote spawn of Venom was the one responsible for freeing Knull in the first place, it's odd that he was nowhere to be found when the God of Symbiotes actually arrived on Earth. Now, an explanation has finally come for fans, revealing that Carnage was absent due to the fact that he was still swimming in the ocean....as a shark.

At the end of Absolute CarnageCarnage succeeded in freeing Knull by forcing Venom to do the deed, though it seemingly came at the expense of Carnage's own life...or so Eddie Brock thought. It wasn't until later during the Venom Island storyline that Eddie realized that a piece of Carnage still remained within his own symbiote. Once Venom purged Carnage from himself, the serial-killing symbiote slinked away into the ocean, having bonded to a great white shark at the end of Venom #25. Now, the first story featured in Carnage: Black, White, and Blood #2 sees Carnage still bonded to that same shark.

Aptly titled, "Carnage Shark" from writer Donny Cates and artist by Kyle Hotz, Carnage is still swimming amongst a group of great white sharks (though he himself is actually a great red shark). Apparently, it was only until King in Black ended that he found a fishing vessel to climb aboard, ready to claim a brand new human host. However, the end of Knull's invasion came with a new King in Black being crowned: Venom. As such, Eddie Brock now has command of all the Symbiote God's legions of symbiotes, and he sets his sights on Carnage, one of his greatest rivals and enemies.

Venom then commanded his symbiotes to bond to sharks of their own, and they subsequently tore Carnage to pieces in the depths below. While this explains where Carnage was during the during an event that was all about symbiotes, fans won't actually have to wait long before they see Carnage again, despite his gruesome punishment from Venom in this issue. Extreme Carnage is coming this July, which will see Carnage gathering a variety of symbiotes for something big in the wake of King in Black's aftermath.

In any case, the fact that Carnage was swimming around as a shark during such a massive event he himself initiated is somewhat disappointing. That being said, at least fans now have an explanation from Cates and Marvel Comics. While Carnage would have certainly been a force to be reckoned with serving Knull, it is pretty cool to see that one of Venom's first acts as the new King in Black was to take care of Carnage (to a degree). While Carnage can never be destroyed completely, it's certainly going to take a while for him come back after being subjected to a brutal feeding frenzy.
