Knights Of The Old Republic Is James Gunn's Favorite Star Wars Property

James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, has revealed that his favorite piece of Star Wars media is BioWare's beloved RPG, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The classic 2003 game has been widely regarded as one of the best Star Wars games but many people, including James Gunn himself, consider it to be one of the best games ever made.

The series is so popular that fans are still holding out hope for a potential Knights of the Old Republic 3 one day, but it doesn't seem like that will happen anytime soon. The RPG captured the hearts of fans as it not only effectively expanded the Star Wars universe during the time of the prequels, but BioWare's knack for creating incredible three-dimensional characters shone through. It was a true Star Wars experience through and through and it was only expanded in its sequel, but a threequel never saw the light of day.

It seems likely that DC Comics and Marvel director James Gunn would be one of the many fans hoping for a new entry, as he expressed his love for Knights of the Old Republic on Twitter, claiming it to be "the greatest video game of all-time". Bold words, to say the least, but a case could certainly be made. Fans went on to ask if Gunn would ever direct a Knights of the Old Republic movie, something that is reportedly in development already, but Gunn actively detested the idea and won't be making the jump to Star Wars. "Just because it's a perfect video game doesn't mean it needs to be a movie," said Gunn in response to another user.

Although Gunn denied wanting to change the game into a movie, perhaps there's a chance he could help flesh out another entry in the series. Before Gunn had signed on to work with Marvel, he helped write a video game known as Lollipop Chainsaw with Suda51. Although they're vastly different games, Gunn has experience in the industry and his talented writing skills could be well-served on the rumored Knights of the Old Republic remake.

It's not clear if the rumored remake would be a from-the-ground-up recreation, which would allow for narrative changes, but seeing James Gunn help flesh out characters in a world he already loves would be pretty incredible. There's no official word on if or when Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic will return, but the chances seem more likely now that EA is not the sole creator behind games in the sci-fi IP. Disney recently confirmed that it would be licensing out titles to a variety of developers on a case by case basis, starting with Ubisoft, who will be working on some sort of open-world game in the Star Wars universe.
