Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon Starts Filming in Oklahoma

Martin Scorsese's highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon has officially started filming. The film marks the sixth collaboration between the legendary director and Leonardo DiCaprio, starting with Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and The Departed during the 2000s and more recently, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street during the early 2010s. The film's ever-growing cast includes another frequent Scorsese collaborator in Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemons, Pat Healy, indigenous actress, Tantoo Cardinal, and musician, Sturgill Simpson.

Now, Scorsese's long-gestating Western drama, Killers of the Flower Moon has begun filming in Oklahoma, confirms IndieWire. The film, based on David Grann's bestselling true-crime book of the same name, is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the mysterious murders of the members of the Osage Nation. This string of brutal crimes, which were committed with the intent of stealing their oil wealth, became known as the Reign of Terror.

In a statement, Scorsese says they are "thrilled" to finally begin production after numerous delays caused by the pandemic. Scorsese also says "an accurate depiction" of the Osage Nation is critical and their goal with the film is "to immortalize a time in American history that should not be forgotten.” To ensure the film's accuracy, Scorsese and DiCaprio reportedly spent months meeting with members of the Osage Nation.

Scorsese's collaborations with DeNiro have ranked among some of the greatest films of all time, and his working relationship with DiCaprio is one of the most financially successful collaborations in the film industry today. Their next collaboration will likely be no different. With a budget of around $200 million, the film seems to be a similar undertaking as his previous film, The Irishman, in terms of scope and scale. Hopefully, there will be more updates from the set of Killers of the Flower Moon as production continues throughout the summer.
