Marvel is retconning a connection between Black Knight and the Eternals in the comics ahead of their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. The upcoming Eternals movie is one of the most intriguing titles on the MCU's Phase 4 slate, and while the Eternals are a well-established franchise dating back to 1976, they've never really been one of Marvel's best-performing comic book titles. They're a lot lower in profile than most of the characters to have been introduced to the MCU to date. The film will also introduce Kit Harington as the Black Knight, and again he's not exactly an A-list superhero.
Marvel Comics is clearly banking on Eternals being a hit. They've recently rebooted the Eternals comic book franchise under Kieron Gillen, with the new book taking thematic and stylistic inspiration from Jonathan Hickman's successful House of X and Powers of X relaunch of the X-Men. Meanwhile, Marvel has also been taking the time to focus on the Black Knight in a miniseries by celebrated writer Simon Spurrier, who seems to have been tasked with rewriting the sword-and-sorcery superhero's history. The first issue of Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade was a tremendous read, with a lot of major retcons that may well move the comic book character closer to his eventual MCU iteration.
AiPT has published an official preview for Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade #2, by Simon Spurrier and Sergio Fernandez Davila, and it suggests the publisher is retconning a historic link between the Black Knight and the Eternals. The issue features several flashbacks to the days of the first Black Knight, back in the time of Camelot and King Arthur, and it suggests readers have only ever had the briefest glimpse of Marvel's Camelot to date. Intriguingly, Camelot is described as "a city rich with marvels. A castle as like to have grown as been built, 'pon roots of no mortal ken. And borne on Celestial engines."
In the comics, the Eternals are an evolutionary offshoot of humanity created by a powerful race of aliens known as the Celestials. If Camelot is indeed linked to the Celestials as well, it is quite possible the Eternals were the ones who provided these "Celestial engines." That would mean the Eternals may well be somehow tied to the origin of the Black Knight's Ebony Blade, an enchanted sword forged from a meteorite that Marvel has recently hinted has the power to split entire worlds asunder. The preview doesn't hint at the full extent of this connection, but the issue - on sale April 21 - is sure to reveal a lot more.
Some Eternals set photos have shown Angelina Jolie's Thena shooting near a Medieval setting, meaning it is quite possible the Eternals have a connection to Camelot in the MCU as well. If that is the case, then the comics could well be carefully retconning Black Knight in order to ensure he corresponds with his big-screen iteration, in the hopes that will make it easier to synergize their comics with a blockbuster movie.
