Everyone in the main cast of New Girl switched career paths at least once during the show's run. Some characters who weren't financially stable at the beginning of the series ended up becoming among the most well-off by the end of it. But because of the number of questionable workplace choices they made, it was a miracle that they were able to maintain stable careers at all.
Jess and her loft mates took turns being in-between jobs throughout the sitcom, which is a part of life that almost all viewers can relate to. In most cases, stepping back from their careers helped them find their true passion. But not all of their passions paid as well as others, and there's a significant difference between how much money the characters had at the show's conclusion.
6 Coach
Coach was in and out of New Girl, so it's difficult to keep tabs on what he was up to when he wasn't living in the loft. He struggles to find a good career throughout his time on the series and ends up going to Jess for help when he's in need of money. She gets him a job teaching gym class at her school, but it doesn't come with the greatest salary.
Coach also doesn't seem to enjoy it much, so it's not a career that works out for him in the long run. He does become a personal trainer which offers significantly better pay, but the gym he opens fails, and he's left indebted to Nick.
5 Winston Bishop
Out of all the characters in the series, Winston had the widest range of jobs. He was a basketball player, a temp, a nanny, and a radio assistant before he discovered what he wanted to do with his life. However, most of these weren't great-paying gigs.
Winston decides to follow his dream of becoming a cop, and while there are a few roadblocks, he overcomes them all. Cops aren't paid well, in general, and given the nature of Winston's previous jobs, it's likely he didn't have a lot of money saved. But Winston is eventually promoted to a detective, which comes with a bump in pay.
4 Jessica Day
Unlike most of her friends, Jess always knew what she wanted to do with her life. Teaching was her passion and it was something she was good at. However, it doesn't prove to be the most stable career for her as she's let go from the middle school she works at and starts teaching a Creative Writing class for adults. Jess eventually gets another job at a middle school, but was still likely only making around $50,000 a year.
Jess continues to advance her career as the series continues and becomes a vice-principal before she becomes the actual principal of the Academy of Banyon Canyon. Principals can make over $100,000 a year, so Jess definitely had a significant pay raise when she got the job. However, she is no longer working at the school in the show's final season.
3 Cece Parekh
As a model in Los Angeles, Cece was very likely financially stable. Although not all modeling jobs pay well, it's made clear that Cece is in the big leagues during her introduction to the series. When she goes to an Indian marriage convention and finds herself at the same table as Nick, she name-drops some of the well-known celebrities she's worked with, in the hopes of getting seated elsewhere.
Eventually, Cece decides that modeling isn't her passion and decides to go back to school to get her degree. She works at the bar with Nick to help pay her school expenses before opening her own modeling agency, "Cece's Boys."
2 Winston Schmidt
Schmidt might not have been making money as a stay-at-home dad in the final season, but for the majority of the show's run, Schmidt was the most well-off out of any of his friends. He was the head of marketing for his company, which is a job that can pay up to $200,000 a year.
Schmidt never seemed short on money and he had no problem splurging. He threw extravagant parties for himself and Nick, and all special effects in his birthday video for Jess seemed rather pricey. Out of all of the characters, Schmidt was rarely the one who was short on cash.
1 Nick Miller
No one expected Nick Miller to come out on top considering that his loft mates had to sneak change into his pants pockets, but that just goes to show that anything is possible with a little hard work. It's tough to figure out exactly how much money Nick had by the end of the show, but his book series The Pepperwood Chronicles sent him and Jess on a worldwide tour.
He was able to lend Coach $71,000, which he never gets back, and even buys the bar he used to work at. Because of his fame as a best-selling author, it seems safe to say that Nick is easily the wealthiest out of the characters.
