Paddington 2 has now become the highest-rated film of all time on Rotten Tomatoes, replacing Orson Welles’ iconic Citizen Kane. The 2017 live-action sequel was heaped with critical acclaim and audience praise upon its release, offering not only a return to the lives of the eponymous bear and the Brown family, but also introducing memorable new characters.
The first Paddington film gave the beloved children’s fables a new lease on life, bringing the character to the big screen like never before. Voiced by Ben Whishaw, Paddington’s life in darkest Peru was briefly introduced before the adventurous bear boarded a ship to London in search of better times. With its impressive cast and sentimental tone, the film scored big with a wide swathe of demographics, ensuring that a sequel would follow. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Paddington 2, however, was how effortlessly it seemed to surpass the good quality fun of its predecessor. At times playing like a G-rated Shawshank Redemption with a Wes Anderson make-over, Paddington 2 was a big hit, though its box-office gross still wasn’t able to match that of the first Paddington film - despite operating on a lower budget.
Now some four years since Paddington 2’s release, its popularity doesn’t seem to be dwindling in the least. In fact, according to The Wrap, the beloved Paul King film has just reached an impressive new milestone: Paddington 2 is now the highest-rated of all time on Rotten Tomatoes, with a perfect 100% score. The sequel nudged the 1941 classic, Citizen Kane out of the number one spot after a newly discovered, negative 80-year-old review from the Chicago Tribune dropped the acclaimed Orson Welles film from a 100% score to 99%.
For decades since its release, Citizen Kane has been lauded as the greatest film ever made, but at least one critic didn’t seem to think much of it, back in 1941. The discovery suits Paddington 2 fans just fine, many of whom have been celebrating the news on social media. The fact that Citizen Kane was previously the review-aggregation site’s highest-rated film of all time shows just how difficult it is to land that top spot. After decades of acclaimed Oscar-winners and films that brought audiences to theaters in droves, the perfect Rotten Tomatoes score has remained more elusive than many cinephiles would have expected. What’s more, the last film that the public would likely expect to see achieve the perfect score milestone would be something as family-friendly and innocuous as Paddington 2.
While it’s great to see Paddington 2 celebrated for achieving Rotten Tomatoes’ highest-rated score of all time, what fans really want is a third entry in the franchise. Ultimately, the most important thing for Paddington fans is not the numerical value of its films, but the continued quality of any and all subsequent installments. Some may argue that being number one on Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t mean much, but even a perfect score on the site can go a long way toward maintaining a certain standard for Paddington’s future.
