Rick and Morty is known for its hilarious take on the sci-fi genre - and the show's outrageous takes on the genre's tropes - but now the titular grandpa/grandson duo is about to take on an entirely new genre (while still maintaining its zany science fiction roots). Rick and Morty are getting their own Murder Mystery comic book adventure; Rick and Morty Presents: The Hotel Immortal.
Imagine taking the whodunnit nature of the game Clue and mixing it together with the absolutely wild antics Rick and Morty is known for; that's exactly what this one-shot comic is aiming for. Adult Swim has teamed up with the Oni-Lion Forge Publishing Group to deliver Rick and Morty Presents: The Hotel Immortal, promising fans an engaging mystery that will also manage to crack the reader up. The pair has recruited an absolutely stellar team to tackle the project, with writer Alejandro Arbona leading the charge, alongside lettering by Crank!, illustrations from Marc Ellerby, and colors via Leonardo Ito.
The murder mystery takes place within the confines of the titular location, the Hotel Immortal. When Cornvelious Daniels checks in, the deaths begin piling up, and the mystery of whodunnit kicks off. Rick and Morty are left to solve the case, which, of course, will include the pair's signature wackiness and hijinks. SYFY WIRE recently got to sit down and interview the creative team behind this upcoming comic, and their passion for the project shines through, sealing the deal that this is going to be a fun read for even the most hardcore fans of the franchise, truly paying respects to the series as a whole:
"I've never been so excited to write a comic book, or so terrified. Rick and Morty looms large in my pop culture obsessions, so it's really intimidating to take it on. Marc Ellerby and Leonardo Ito and Crank! have told a lot of great, hilarious Rick and Morty stories together, so working with them makes me feel safe, and held. If a comic book's going to pull off being funny, it really needs to be funny in the visuals most of all, and when I saw the wild vibe they've created so far, I knew we'd be great. This is one funny, funny comic." - Alejandro Arbona
“It's a testament to the property that as I approach my nine hundredth interior page of Rick and Morty comics, I'm still able to work on new stories that haven't been done before," added Ellerby. "A Wubba Lubba Who-Dunnit!? Sign me up! Alejandro's premise is brilliant, and I'm beyond happy to continue my working relationship with Oni Press, as well as the best colorist in the business, Leonard Ito.”
This isn't Rick and Morty's first dive into comic books, though the overall continuity of the comics and how they fit into the television series' universe can be a bit confusing. Luckily, there's a Rick and Morty comic book reading guide available for fans who want to get into the books but don't know where to start.
Rick and Morty Presents: The Hotel Immortal is scheduled to release on July 17.
