Spider-Man Annual Tells His Life Story from Villain's Perspective

Following their overwhelming success with Spider-Man: Life Story, writer Chip Zdarksy (Daredevil, X-Men / Fantastic Four) and artist Mark Bagley (Ultimate Spider-Man, The Thunderbolts) are returning to the world of Marvel Comics' famed superhero, shifting focus from the titular wall-crawler to an iconic Spider-Man nemesis.

A follow-up to 2019's critically acclaimed Spider-Man Life Story will be coming this summer in the form of Spider-Man Life Story Annual #1, from the original creative team of Zdarksy and Bagley. However, the two are taking a slightly different approach in comparison to their previous Spider-Man work. Life Story Annual #1 will remain focused on the career of the friendly neighborhood web-slinger, however, this time it will be seen through the eyes of Spidey's most famous critic and former publisher of The Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson.

As the title suggests, Spider-Man Life Story highlighted the life-long career of Peter Parker, from the comic character's start in the 1960s to the 2010s throughout a six-issue miniseries. Unlike the main Marvel continuity, Life Story depicts Spider-Man and his supporting characters aging in real-time. While Life Story served as a wholesome love letter to fans of Spider-Man himself throughout the years, Spider-Man Life Story Annual #1 will offer even more, giving readers the perspective of Jameson, Spider-Man's most personal human foe. The issue will feature Jameson doing what he has done best since 1963's Amazing Spider-Man #1: attempting to convince the public of the true menace lurking within Spider-Man, even if it costs him his own livelihood.

Jonah has remained a fixture in the lives of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man from the hero's initial start as a teenager throughout adulthood, making him an ideal candidate to spearhead this new story. What makes the new POV even more intriguing are the events of Spider-Man history that may be explored. One viable option could be Jameson's involvement in the creation of the supervillain the Scorpion. Another avenue that could be explored would be Jameson's relationship with his son John. Unlike his father, John actively supports Spider-Man and fellow superheroes in New York City, though John would occasionally transform into a crazed werewolf whom the heroes need to stop. There are countless connections between Jameson and Spider-Man that could prove natural for exploration from Jameson's perspective.

Though Zdarksy and Bagley's future plans with the Life Story title beyond Annual #1 are currently unclear, the Life Story Annual #1 designation may hint that the creatives have further plans in store for additional friends and foes within the Spider-Man mythology (a Life Story Annual focused on Harry Osborn or Mary Jane could be fun). But, until then, a Spider-Man Life Story hardcover containing the original six-issue Spider-Man Life Story storyline and Annual #1 will be c0ming to fans later this year to commemorate the new release.

With Jameson receiving a newfound concentration in Nick Spencer and Patrick Gleason's current run of Amazing Spider-Man, it's an exciting time for fans of Spider-Man and his flat-topped nemesis. Spider-Man Life Story Annual #1 will be released to comic book retailers on August 4th.
