The Boys: Soldier Boy Could Have A Secret Ally In The Seven

Could Soldier Boy have help from inside the Seven to take Homelander's place in The Boys season 3? When Amazon last caught up with Billy Butcher and The Boys, Vought was recovering from a PR disaster. Once upon a time, Homelander could do no wrong, but after a series of public outbursts and a romantic entanglement with a Nazi, his popularity started tumbling. Finally, Queen Maeve took advantage to blackmail Homelander into submission, leaving the Seven's leader in a far more vulnerable position than he's accustomed to. The news only gets worse for Homelander, as The Boys season 3 will introduce Soldier Boy, played by Supernatural's Jensen Ackles.

The comic book iteration of Soldier Boy is a Captain America parody from WWII, very similar in presentation to Homelander, but not quite as depraved. Soldier Boy is a cowardly, naive superhero who desperately wishes to join the Seven, doing whatever Homelander asks of him in hopes of a promotion. Based on what's known about Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy in The Boys season 3 (and considering Homelander's fall from grace), Amazon's Soldier Boy could be trying to force his way into the Seven's leadership position instead of sucking up to Homelander.

With another patriotic hero vying for his place, Homelander could use some support from his colleagues in The Seven. Unfortunately, support isn't likely to be forthcoming. Every single member of the Seven has some kind of axe to grind against Homelander. Maeve is still hurting from the mental torment she and Elena were subject to, and would grasp any opportunity to eject Homelander with both hands. Starlight, meanwhile, is effectively another member of The Boys at this point. Butcher might decide that Soldier Boy is the lesser of two evils, and conspire with Jensen Ackles' character to kill Homelander, exploiting his Starlight connection to get Soldier Boy's foot in the door.

While Maeve and Starlight are the most likely suspects to help Soldier Boy give Homelander the boot, other members of the Seven could turn against their leader. Though he was reinstated thanks to the Church of the Collective, A-Train was unceremoniously booted out the Seven in The Boys season 2 by - who else? Homelander. Having been stabbed in the back so spectacularly, A-Train would no doubt jump at the chance to return the favor by helping out Soldier Boy. And she might not be a member of the Seven any longer, but Stormfront is still alive (just about) in The Boys season 3. She might be seeking a measure of revenge against her ex-boyfriend after their plan for world domination was quashed, and Soldier Boy could be desperate enough to listen.

Until now, Homelander has inspired such fear in his Seven colleagues, none dared move against him. Even after Queen Maeve built up the courage to blackmail the milk-chugging madman, she didn't go so far as to demand his resignation. This is partially because Homelander is simply too valuable to Vought, but the emergence of Soldier Boy changes the game - suddenly, there's a viable alternative to the current regime. And with Antony Starr's character at his lowest ebb, Maeve, A-Train and Starlight have a golden chance to replace their shared nemesis with a someone who doesn't pleasure themselves atop skyscrapers or burn holes through innocent bystanders.

The idea of someone within the Seven actively working to get rid of Homelander sets up a fascinating new dynamic for The Boys season 3. Whoever the mole is will be taking a huge gamble - like walking into the lion's den covered in KFC - but the opportunity Soldier Boy presents could be too good to resist. Were members of the Seven to conspire against him, it'll be interesting to see whether Homelander would still be portrayed as the villain. With the introduction of Ryan in season 2, The Boys took a tentative few steps towards humanizing Homelander. If Soldier Boy instigated his downfall by sneakily infiltrating the Seven, The Boys may, intentionally or otherwise, invite viewers to feel sympathy for Homelander.
