The Masked Singer: Lack of Female Singers Leads to Casting Questions

Five contestants (six if you count returning host Nick Cannon as the Bulldog) have been eliminated on The Masked Singer season 5, and many fans are frustrated by the lack of female singers. The vast majority of the celebrities have been male, including Danny Trejo, Logan Paul and Mark McGrath. They even had a male Muppet compete on the hit reality series. Most of the remaining masked contestants are men as well. So far, Caitlyn Jenner is the only female contestant on The Masked Singer to reveal her identity.

This uneven gender ratio isn't exclusive to season 5, though it wasn't an issue when The Masked Singer first launched. Back in season 1, there were six men versus six women, an even split. The same thing occurred in the second season, with eight men and eight women. Then the gender divide slowly began in season 3, when 10 men competed against eight women. The gap widened more the next time around, when there were only six women versus 11 men.

Now six episodes into The Masked Singer season 5, the lack of female singers is becoming far more apparent, and fans have taken to Reddit to point out this major issue. Some viewers find it unacceptable that producers haven't been able to cast more women. Others believe producers just haven't been able to find as many women willing to compete on the show.

To some people, The Masked Singer is just a celebrity-filled reality show and nothing more, but viewers are right to point out the lack of women competing in season 5. It becomes even more apparent when you look back over the course of the entire series and notice this trend from season to season. It seems like the producers purposefully chose an even number of men and women in the first two seasons. Competition shows don't have to have an even split every single time. There were some seasons of American Idol in which the producers made sure they had the same number of male and female semifinalists and finalists. During other seasons, that didn't matter as much. Isolated incidents are one thing. But The Masked Singer appears to be going through an evolution that doesn't take gender into consideration anymore.

As mentioned in the Reddit comments above, some fans believe that the producers haven't been able to find as many female celebrities willing to join The Masked Singer. That's a very valid point. Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated incident, and each season sees fewer and fewer female celebrities competing on The Masked Singer. Fans are hoping that producers correct their mistakes next season. Only time will tell if that happens.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8pm on FOX.
