Superfan episodes of NBC's The Office are now streaming on Peacock. Based on the British show of the same name, The Office is a mockumentary-style sitcom that explores the lives of employees at the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, PA. After a rocky first season, the show found its footing and gained a massive following, eventually becoming one of Rolling Stone's Top 100 greatest television shows of all time. The show has won countless awards, including four Emmy Awards, and served as a launchpad for the careers of famed comedy actors like Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Ed Helms, and Mindy Kaling, among countless others.
Peacock, NBC's exclusive streaming service, launched in July of 2020 and features content from NBCUniversal as well as some of its subsidiaries. While The Office had been streaming on Netflix for many years, Peacock subsequently obtained the streaming rights to the show; The Office was moved from Netflix to Peacock on January 1, 2021 – much to the chagrin of Netflix users and avid fans of the show – along with NBC's other mockumentary hit, Parks and Recreation. In 2020, The Office was streamed a collective 57 billion minutes on Netflix, helping it to gain a second wind of popularity after the series ended in 2013. In an effort to make its transition from Netflix to Peacock less upsetting to fans, Peacock released various "superfan" episodes from the show's third season, along with additional bonus content, for Peacock premium subscribers.
Earlier today, Peacock announced on Twitter that superfan episodes from the first season of The Office are now available to stream. This release includes extended cuts of all six episodes from the series' first season filled with never-before-seen cut scenes that did not make it to air. The Office's first season is not as critically acclaimed as its subsequent seasons, but these superfan episodes will explore aspects of the show's characters – for instance, Jim and Pam's budding romance – originally unseen at the time of the premiere.
Despite its unmatchable success on Netflix, The Office has managed to gain even more viewership since its move to Peacock. This is likely due in part to the superfan episodes and other bonus content. Because all Peacock subscription levels, except Premium Plus, include ads during shows, viewers were miffed considering they could originally watch The Office with no ads on Netflix. That being said, Peacock has managed to compensate for advertisements by proving die-hard fans of the show with enough bonus content to last them months. Aside from the superfan episodes, Peacock also streams bloopers, behind-the-scenes, and other clip playlists from the show, as well as a 24-7 channel called The Office Zen, which plays ambient office noise for viewers looking to get some work done.
The Office may have concluded in 2013, but the show has maintained an equally successful afterlife due to not only the plethora of content on Peacock but also the show's constantly growing fanbase. The Office is geared towards ages 14+, and viewers who watched it during its run on NBC are now sharing the show with younger generations who have reached the viewing age. The series' racy, and oftentimes uncomfortable, humor has bridged taboo topics in a human way while capturing the hearts of audiences everywhere. Especially in the show's first season, The Office exemplified an edge never before seen in TV comedy, yet managed to keep NBC's audiences engaged for eight more seasons.
