"Nobody really knows for sure what happens when you die. If they say they do, they are lying," Harry Ambrose said to Julian Walker after the little boy confided in him about his pain. Harry was just doing what he does best in The Sinner; helping good people pushed to commit murder by dark thoughts from their past. It takes a big heart and a sharp mind to be Harry Ambrose.
The first three seasons of the crime drama have focused on Harry Ambrose's approach to killers as potential victims of trauma rather than cold-blooded murderers. Harry's fair approach doesn't relieve the main characters from the responsibility of weighing the consequences of their actions before doing anything though. Some of the main characters, such as Nick Haas, just lost sight of what was important, losing everything in the process.
10 Jamie Burns
Jamie Burns was the first murder suspect that Harry Ambrose had to kill because he just pushed him to the limits. Jamie had a lot going for him including loving wife with a beautiful baby and a great job with students that adored him. He chose to throw all of that away because he wanted to "feel something."
He is the one who called Nick Haas back into his life setting off the tragic events that led to all those deaths. He wasn't out of his mind, Jamie just didn't care about the impact of his actions on himself and others. The saddest part is that he didn't even show remorse after killing all those people.
9 Phoebe Lacey
Phoebe Lacey's mother convinced her that her terminal illness was caused by Cora's sins and she believed that all her life. She knew that Cora felt guilty for something she hadn't done, but instead of being a sister, Phoebe became Cora's nightmare. She put Cora's life in danger and didn't even feel sorry when Cora suffered because of Phoebe's mistakes.
She just kept pushing until everyone was hurt. She was right about wanting to die on her own terms but she didn't have to ruin Cora's life while at it. Going to the Beverwyck club that night was reckless, as was sleeping with Frankie knowing her heart just couldn't withstand it.
8 Nick Haas
All Nick Haas needed to do to stay alive was be reasonable. If he had listened to Jamie and cared for himself a little more than he did, he wouldn't have died. He was an educated man with enough money and a whole life ahead of him but he didn't appreciate it. He was more interested in living on the edge and hurting himself and other people.
When he came to Jamie's house, he realized that his friend was happy with his family and that made him jealous. He tried to bring Jamie back to the darkness with him and wouldn't listen even when Jamie begged him to stop the car. He never cared about the possible consequences of his actions and that was stupid of him.
7 Cora Tannetti
Cora Tannetti was strong enough to survive so much trauma and come out on the bright side with a loving husband and a beautiful son. Having been brought up by a zealot and an abusive father, Cora didn't have much of a choice but to protect her sister.
She still had the freedom to say no to Phoebe's manipulation though, and that would have saved many people. When she got married to Mason, she should also have told him the truth about the bits of her dark past that she remembered and that would probably have saved many people.
6 Mason Tannetti
Mason Tannetti was a great father and husband who found himself in an impossible position when Cora stabbed Frankie Belmont on the beach. Cora was the victim of traumatic events and the crime wasn't her fault.
Mason had to seek out J.D to try and save his wife while still protecting their son from the hate thrown at them in the neighborhood. He was reckless in going after the drug dealers on his own without a plan but he was a good father. He managed to save everyone in the end.
5 Sonya Barzel
Sonya Barzel was the bravest woman Harry met in the show, which is why he fell in love with her. She was rich and talented but she didn't care about that. She wanted to know how people felt and to get to the bottom of things just like Harry and that put her in danger.
Living alone on such a vast estate with lots of valuable artwork was totally reckless. She also put herself in danger when she sat there and waited for Jamie who had already killed two people to come and kill her. She was talented, smart, and brave, but not very careful.
4 Heather Novack
Heather looked up to her father as her role model and wanted to be a great detective just like him one day but she was wrong about him. Her father had raped her best friend and lover but she didn't know because they both hid it from her.
She was still the best friend Marin had as she fought for her even when Marin pushed her away. She was wrong to look at Vera as the villain but she was only trying to protect Julian. She was also a great detective that didn't let her connection get in the way of justice and was certainly better than her father.
3 Julian Walker
The Mosswood Commune was the wrong place for any child to grow up, but Julian Walker was no normal kid. He was a strong-willed boy that wouldn't put anyone in danger even if it meant that he had to suffer. The commune had taught him that anyone that lied was supposed to die and that it was not wrong if he killed such a person, so he did that.
When the two Mosswwod followers lied and kidnapped him, he used his knowledge of plants to kill them. He was just a child though, and when he realized what he had done was wrong, he was genuinely remorseful. He was gentleman enough to refuse a chance to flee the country and come back to face the sentence for his crime.
2 Vera Walker
Vera Walker had a natural motherly instinct and that made her selfless but most importantly, very wise. Lionel Jeffries, the founder of Mosswood Grove, was her mentor, but when he lost his way, Vera found a way of keeping the commune together. She fooled The Beacon into giving up his control of the community before she turned it into a friendly place for victims.
When Marin proved to be a bad mother, Vera stood up and nursed Julian as her own son, taking up the role that no one else would. She navigated the Julian situation cautiously, avoiding mistakes and making friends with Harry in the process. She was also smart to bring Julian back to the police so he could become an upright citizen in the future.
1 Harry Ambrose
"We all have dark thoughts... We just learn to live with them," Harry told Jamie Burns who was going off the rails despite all the help he was being offered. While everyone else considers killers as dangerous people that deserve to go to prison, Harry Ambrose stands up for them seeking instead to understand their state of mind and the darkness that causes them to commit crimes.
He is not very good at protecting himself and his family but all decisions Harry makes are for the common good. He is always cautious about judging anybody and ends up on the right side of everything.
