Out of all of the characters in the history of The Vampire Diaries, Caroline Forbes is one of the most complex and well-developed out of the entire cast. She began as someone who seemed like a shallow and self-absorbed girl, but as time went on her hidden depths were revealed, and over the course of the series she transformed into an entirely different person.
She almost always occupied the role of the protagonist, and she really became the show's leading heroine after Elena was sidelined. However, she wasn't without her flaws, and although she was more of a hero, she did have some villainous moments as well.
10 Was The Hero: When She Saved Bonnie
In most instances where the Mystic Falls gang is in danger, Bonnie Bennett is the one who is coming to the rescue to whoever is in big trouble, and oftentimes she's the one bearing the brunt of the suffering, injury, or pain.
So then, when a coven of witches was attempting to kill Bonnie and stop her from using her expression magic, it means a lot that Caroline didn't hesitate to come to her rescue, even if it meant killing all of the witches trying to kill Bonnie.
9 Was The Villain: Killing A Coven Of Witches
On the flip side of that, while it certainly means a lot that Caroline is willing to commit mass murder in order to save the life of someone she loves, that doesn't erase the fact that she committed mass murder.
Not only did the witch massacre result in the death of the 12 witches, but it completed the dangerous Expression triangle and pretty much guaranteed that Silas was going to succeed.
8 Was The Hero: When She Gave Up Matt
While there's no guarantee that Caroline would have hurt Matt if they had continued their relationship, it was pretty heroic of her to realize that she was a danger to him and she couldn't put him at risk.
Caroline has always wanted to be in love and has always wanted the approval of her boyfriends, so the fact that she finally had what she'd always wanted in Matt and gave that up for his sake means a lot.
7 Was The Villain: Killing The Carnival Worker
It's not uncommon for new vampires to have a lot of trouble controlling themselves, and it was doubly hard for Caroline both because she didn't know what was happening to her, and because a lot of horrifying memories that had been compelled away were now coming back to her.
But the fact remains, that almost immediately after transitioning, she murdered an innocent man because the smell of his blood completely overwhelmed her.
6 Was The Hero: When She Convinced Klaus To Be Better
It was incredibly rare for Klaus to be affected by anyone, but Caroline had a huge impact on him, and she used that to her advantage and the advantage of others many times.
Klaus' interest in Caroline motivated him to do things that were wildly out of character, and the fact that she convinced him to be more forgiving and not kill those that he sought vengeance against was a big deal.
5 Was The Villain: Killing Luke Parker
To be fair, Caroline killed Luke with the express intention of him coming back to life, as she was killing him in order to motivate Liv to resurrect him and Stefan along with him.
However, the casual way in which Caroline murdered a fairly innocent man and had zero qualms with gambling someone's life in order to get what she wanted was actually pretty horrifying and villainous.
4 Was The Hero: When She Stood Up To Damon
While they sort of developed a frenemy-style relationship as time went on, it's undeniable that when they first met, Damon treated Caroline absolutely abhorrently.
Caroline eventually accepted him as part of their friend group, but she was one of the few people who would actually confront Damon on his bad behavior, and would even fight him despite the fact that he was much stronger than her. She wasn't afraid to square off with him when he was playing the bad guy.
3 Was The Villain: Forcing Liam To Perform Surgery On Sarah Salvatore
Vampires who have turned their humanity off are always a bit of a problem, but honestly, it seems like their friends' attempts to force them to turn their humanity back on cause even more problems.
That was clearly the case with Caroline, as when Stefan and the rest of the Mystic Falls gang pressured her to deal with her emotions, Caroline abducted Sarah Salvatore and compelled Liam to perform surgery on her in order to strongarm Stefan into doing what she wanted.
2 Was The Hero: When She Helped Tyler
Caroline knew better than anyone how terrifying it was to transition into a supernatural creature with no idea what's happening or how to handle it, so it shouldn't be hugely surprising that she didn't want Tyler to have to go through his werewolf transformation alone.
But, Caroline was putting her life at risk by helping him, and she really made him a better person with her constant support.
1 Was The Villain: Forcing Stefan To Turn Off His Humanity
In fairness, considering all of the wrath that many vampires have wrought when they flipped their humanity switch, Caroline was hardly the worst or most problematic humanity-free vampire.
However, her demand that Stefan flip his humanity switch with her and access his ripper side was exceptionally cruel. She knew how much Stefan hated that side of himself better than anyone, and given that she was Stefan's blood sobriety sponsor in her normal life, this was one of her most brutal decisions.
