10 Breakups In Friends That Fans Were Rooting For | ScreenRant

Over the course of Friends, every one of the main characters dates a surprisingly large number of characters (and Ross, of course, marries several of them!). And while, in the end, they manage to (mostly) find their lobsters, it takes a whole lot of breakups along the way. Some of these were the ones that broke fans' hearts, especially when they came down to two people who just don't want the same thing (like Monica and Richard). Others, though, were far from upsetting.

These are the breakups that fans were thrilled to see happen - and that they were usually rooting for from the moment the characters got together. Sometimes the dynamic was just weird, sometimes everyone knew that the Friend in question was meant to be with someone else, and sometimes they were just unlikable people.

10 Rachel & Paolo

Paolo may have been gorgeous, and a great rebound relationship for Rachel at a point where she was dealing with finding her feet and exploring her new life post-Barry, but no one wanted it to last. This early on in the show, fans were pretty universally rooting for Ross and Rachel, and Paolo was a very obvious roadblock to that relationship. Then, when he groped Phoebe during a massage, any lingering doubts about his relationship with Rachel were gone, and fans were thrilled to see her dump him.

9 Phoebe & Roger

Roger was, in essence, just an incredibly annoying person. Phoebe dated him briefly in the first season, and his tendency to 'therapize' the group led to them all absolutely hating him... and with good reason. Roger clearly thought that he was the smartest, most perceptive person in every room, and yet wasn't perceptive enough to pick up on when people wanted to be analyzed, and when that might not be appropriate. In the end, he even gets angry about not being 'appreciated' for this unwanted 'insight', and everyone was happy to see Phoebe get rid of him.

8 Ross & Emily

Emily may have been a great person, but the show absolutely set her up to be hated. From the first moment she appears on the show, she is angry and rude, and while she becomes more likable over time, it's not enough to really redeem her. Add to this her pushiness around her wedding to Ross, the speed of their relationship as a whole, her jealous demands around Ross's interactions with Rachel, and the simple fact that everyone knew Ross and Rachel were endgame, and it was clear that everyone was waiting for this to turn into another Geller divorce.

7 Ross & Elizabeth

Ross fails to find an appropriate relationship again in season six, when he starts dating one of his students. This was a hugely problematic relationship from the start, especially as it could have actually led to Ross getting fired (and for good reason).

Elizabeth was a nice enough person, but her relationship with Ross was incredibly inappropriate, and fans breathed a sigh of relief when he finally ended it - after realizing that perhaps they were not at the same point in their lives, and she wasn't quite mature enough for a three-time-divorced father.

6 Joey & Charlie

Joey and Charlie were cute together, but fans were definitely ready for this one to end almost as soon as it began. The two just had nothing in common - Charlie was actively dating Joey because she wanted to take a break from dating geniuses, and Joey was dating Charlie because she was gorgeous. They had nothing in common, and Ross clearly had a thing for Charlie (and was much more appropriate for her as a partner). Their eventual breakup in Barbados was one that fans saw coming a mile off, and were happy when it finally arrived.

5 Ross & Mona

For once, Ross actually managed to start a relationship with a wonderful, understanding, age-appropriate woman that he was getting to know slowly - but fans were rooting for it to end because Mona deserved better! She and Ross got together around the time that Rachel was pregnant (with Ross's baby, of course), and Ross treated her terribly. He didn't tell her everything that was going on with his situation, he repeatedly forgot plans with her, he ran out of a date with her when Rachel was having Braxton-Hicks contractions, he didn't tell her that Rachel moved in (or consider asking her about how she would feel about that decision before making it official), and he freaked out at her for wanting to send out a holiday card (even though he would usually have proposed by that point).

4 Rachel & Russ

Russ was essentially a gag character for Rachel to date, but it was an effective one, so of course, fans were rooting for them to break up! Rachel dated Russ after breaking up with Ross, and couldn't see that they were essentially exactly the same person.

It was deeply awkward, especially when she finally noticed it - and fans just wondered what took her so long!

3 Monica & Timothy Burke

Timothy may have made a great boyfriend for Monica, but he was Richard's son, and it was just too weird to think about Monica actively in this relationship. She and Richard were such a huge relationship on the show, and such a big part of her life, that it just felt inappropriate for her to date Timothy - and there was always the question of how that would work out if she and Timothy got serious. In the end, she couldn't handle it herself, especially when Timothy reminded her of Richard, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief that it was over.

2 Joey & Rachel

Of all the relationships on the series, this was definitely the most hated by fans as a whole. The decision to pair up Joey and Rachel felt like lazy writing, and often just seemed awkward - especially given Rachel's history with Ross, and then the messy Rachel/Joey/Ross/Charlie love triangle (or love square, perhaps!). The relationship never really felt like it was working, and lacked true chemistry, so when they decided to call it quits, it just made sense.

1 Ross & Julie

Although Julie was a lovely person, and was arguably better for Ross than Rachel was, fans were still rooting for her relationship to fail - because in the first few seasons of the show, it was all about Ross and Rachel. The build up in the first season to Rachel realizing that Ross had feelings for her, and then realizing that she reciprocated them, was a huge deal, and everyone expected them to get together at that point. When Ross got off the plane with Julie, though, it was heartbreaking - and no matter how great Julie was, from that moment, fans wanted her relationship with Ross to end.
