10 Things In Resident Evil Remake Most Players Never Discover

The remake of the original Resident Evil game, first released for the Gamecube in 2002 and again for multiple platforms in 2015, is regarded as being among the greatest survival horror games ever made, and perhaps the definitive Resident Evil experience. Famous for its oppressive atmosphere, challenging survival mechanics, and memorable scares, there's a lot to love when it comes to REmake.

At the same time though, players who want to dig a little deeper into this survival horror classic will find a veritable treasure trove of hidden content, easter eggs, and unlockables to discover. Some of these secrets will only reveal themselves to the most skillful of players, requiring a deft eye for exploration, or a lightning-quick pace through the game, but they're there for those who dare to search.

10 Numerous Alternate Endings

Although the Resident Evil experience will always end with its iconic Tyrant boss fight (made extra fun with rocket launchers), some of the nuances of the story itself can shift around on account of the player's actions. The most consequential of these choices often concerns the fates of certain characters.

With both Jill and Chris to choose from, there's a surprisingly large range of possible outcomes in each story. Will Rebecca make it through the ordeal alive? What about Barry? Is Jill ever going to reunite with Chris and get him out of the mansion? It's all in the player's hands, and they'll have to make some hard choices along the way to get to certain outcomes.

9 Alternate Costumes

Although the 2015 re-release of Resident Evil's remake (re-REmake? re-RE-remake?) included bonus costumes for Chris and Jill for free, there are still some bonus outfits that the player can unlock if they complete the game a certain number of times with each character.

Chris and Jill have two bonus costumes each (as well as one for Rebecca) that can be unlocked by beating the game and then beating the game once again with the same character in the same save slot. This means that the player will have to beat the game four times in total to unlock all the costumes, but they aren't the only rewards out there for players who want more from the Resident Evil experience.

8 One Dangerous Zombie

Forest Speyer was a member of S.T.A.R.S. sent to investigate the Spencer Mansion who met his end when he was pecked to death by zombie crows. In a normal playthrough, the zombified Forest is dispatched by fellow S.T.A.R.S. members upon his reanimation. After beating the game with both characters, however, the player will notice something different.

Once two playthroughs are complete, "One Dangerous Zombie" mode is enabled and cannot be turned off. This mode is totally identical to an ordinary run, except that now zombie Forest will chase the player around the mansion with a dangerous amount of explosives strapped to him. Shooting Forest is not an option, because he'll blow up and take the entire mansion with him, making the game even tenser.

7 Unlimited Grenade Glitch

Although this element of the game was patched out in the re-release of Resident Evil, the original Gamecube version of the game featured a glitch wherein the player could endlessly multiply ammunition for Jill's grenade launcher using very specific manipulation of the item box.

If the player so chooses, moving items around in a particular order can grant Jill practically infinite grenade launcher ammo. This, of course, breaks the balance of the game entirely and is no longer available in newer versions of Resident Evil. Still, those who have held on to their old copies of the game might want to give this glitch a look, because more grenades can definitely help in a pinch.

6 Tofu?

Tofu is a secret character in many Resident Evil games, and as the name implies, he's just a giant block of tofu that keeps showing up in life-or-death zombie outbreaks. Tofu is usually tasked with escaping from a given spooky mansion as a sort of bonus challenge mode, but he's nowhere to be seen in Resident Evil's remake.

Or is he? Fans with a sharp memory will recall the password to the Lab's computer puzzle was "Mole." Trying to input that password to bypass the same puzzle in the remake won't work, but it will trigger a familiar shout from a certain soybean-based character.

5 Samurai Edge

The Resident Evil remake, like many games in the franchise, rewards the player for completing the game in a timely manner with unlockables. These unlockables are commonly powered-up weapons that outclass those available in a normal playthrough, allowing a skilled player to blast their way through later runs without a care in the world.

One such weapon is the formidable "Samurai Edge," a recurring handgun under various owners in RE, which can be unlocked after clearing the game in under five hours. The weapon has infinite ammo and can squeeze off three rounds in quick succession - far faster than the fire rate of other handguns in the game.

4 Invisible Enemies

Invisible Enemies is relatively self-explanatory, but that doesn't make it any less terrifying. When the game says "invisible," it means completely invisible, and when the game says "enemies," it means quite literally every enemy in the game.

Players who dare to subject themselves to this challenge will need to complete the game with both Chris and Jill on any difficulty, or complete the "Real Survival" challenge mode. Surviving Invisible Enemies will require a front-to-back knowledge of where every zombie or hunter in the mansion is and is therefore passable by only the most advanced players.

3 AT Rocket Launcher

The ultimate unlockable weapon in Resident Evil is the Anti-Tank Rocket Launcher. Lugging around a rocket launcher is a pretty good way to make any zombie-infested mansion seem less scary, but the deal gets even sweeter because this weapon is graced with the gift of unlimited ammo.

Although it's heavy and takes a while to get off a shot, blowing apart zombies without a second thought is an empowering feeling and something players won't want to miss. It won't be easy to unlock, though, as this weapon is available only to those who can complete the game in under three hours.

2 Real Survival Mode

After completing Resident Evil's version of New Game Plus (ominously called "Once Again..."), the player will unlock an enhanced difficulty mode called "Real Survival." Real Survival is among the game's most difficult challenges, although perhaps not the most difficult, and is intended for advanced players only.

Aside from disabling auto-aim and locking the game in on hard, one of the cruelest elements of Real Survival is the fact that item boxes are no longer linked together, meaning that the player will have to be even more careful about which items they want to bring with them when venturing into the mansion.

1 A Special Message From Mikami

Players who manage to complete the secret "Invisible Enemy" mode, which is itself unlocked after beating the game with both characters, will be pleased to find a specialized message from the creator of Resident Evil himself: Shinji Mikami. The note is mostly there to congratulate the player for beating the game's hardest mode, and to thank them for playing Resident Evil.

It's always nice to see a personal touch from the developers show up in a game like this, and it's especially meaningful when it's a reward for completing what is perhaps the most arduous challenge the game has to offer.
