Even though fans were predicting Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson would become the new Captain America by the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Mackie's kids didn't recognize him in the finale. Mackie debuted as the Falcon in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and went on to play the role in succeeding Captain America and Avengers movies. In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a six-part miniseries streaming on Disney+, Mackie stars alongside Sebastian Stan, who reprises his role as Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, six months after the superheroes have successfully restored half of the universe's population and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) had passed on his Captain America shield to his wingman, Sam Wilson/Falcon. The beginning of the series showed Sam struggling with the thought of becoming the iconic hero. New threats forced Sam and Bucky to team up again, and by the sixth episode, the Falcon finally embraced his new mantle. Wearing a new hybrid costume, he used the recognizable vibranium shield to burst through an enemy's window, announcing that he's the new Captain America.
More than a week since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale aired, fans are still talking about the memorable scene. Speaking with ET Mackie gushed about the overwhelming success of the series and revealed that he watched the finale with his four sons. According to him, watching the series as a parent allowed him to enjoy it and be a spectator. The actor also shared a hilarious moment when his kids saw him on TV and didn't immediately recognize that Daddy was the new Captain America. Mackie explained:
They looked at the screen and go, "Dad! The guy looks just like you!" And I'm like "I know." And the five-year-old goes, "He sounds like you, too!" They can't put together that I'm on TV and on the couch at the same time. So the little one goes, "You know Dad, you can be Captain America!" I was like, "Thanks, man, I appreciate it."
Mackie's first shot at being Captain America received praises from Marvel fans, especially because having a black actor play the superhero is both relevant and powerful. Thanks to proper character development from the MCU writers, many felt Falcon deserved to be the new Captain America, even more so than Steve's other long-time friend. According to Mackie, Sam Wilson's turn as Captain America gives the character a sense of "humanity and humility" because of his background as an Air Force veteran and counselor.
While Sam was a central part of the original Avengers, his backstory has never been explored in the movies. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier served as his origin story and also gave Bucky a redemption arc he deserved. For Marvel fans, this isn't the last time they'll be seeing the two heroes as the finale ended with the curious title card, "Captain America and the Winter Soldier." It is still unclear whether this will be for season 2 of the series or a new Captain America movie. One thing is for sure: Phase 4 of the MCU will usher in exciting new things, and Sam and Bucky are going to be a big part of it.
