Battlefield 6 Confirmed For Last-Gen & Current-Gen Console Release

Battlefield 6 is coming to both current and last-gen consoles, as confirmed by EA during an earnings call. Battlefield 6 was rumored to avoid last-gen consoles, with fans hoping EA and DICE would fully embrace the potential allotted by the technology of the Xbox Series X and PS5. However, it looks like that may not totally be the case.

There is precedent for this, however. Battlefield 4 launched alongside the Xbox One and PS4, but still released on the previous generation of consoles as well. About a year and a half later, Battlefield Hardline also came to both generations of consoles and was the last entry on Xbox 360 and PS3. Battlefield 4 was visually enhanced by Xbox One and PS4, and also got more than double the player count, allowing for an incredible level of scope and scale, but both versions were still well-made.

Despite rumors of a Battlefield 6 reveal last week, EA has not budged on offering a trailer for the highly-anticipated shooter. A reveal is planned for June, but EA (via VGC) offered some small tidbits during its investors call. The publisher confirmed Battlefield 6 will release on both last-gen and current-gen consoles and CEO Andrew Wilsom expressed great optimism in both versions of the game, speaking highly of EA and DICE's previous efforts.

I had the great fortune of growing up in this company and building games on multiple generations, and I think when you think about our infrastructure around our Frostbite team, our digital services teams, and our game teams, you have unbelievable experience getting the very best out of the past generation consoles to ensure that even as we move to the next generation, we’re getting more and more out of the old generation platforms, and so those games are going to look great."

Battlefield 6 leaks have shown an incredible scope for the title, revealing things like a near-future setting with possible tornados as one of the game's "levolution" effects. EA is remaining mum on setting or any real gameplay specifics, but is hyping up the title a lot ahead of its reveal and promising a marquee title for fans.

Whether or not Battlefield 6 will feel restrained or watered down due to having to compensate for almost ten year old hardware remains to be seen. DICE are masters of technology, showing prowess with consoles, PC, and its in-house Frostbite engine. With rumors of 128-player multiplayer, it'll be interesting to see just how "next-gen" Battlefield 6 really is.
