Quantic Dream, developer of Detroit: Become Human, is now in development on its next AAA game, according to a new job listing. Quantic Dream and its founder David Cage have produced narrative, cinematic stories since 1997, but would break out with 2010’s Heavy Rain. Detroit: Become Human, originally exclusive to PlayStation, is among the growing number of titles to release on PC as a part of an expanded collection of ported Sony exclusive titles.
Quantic Dream has met criticism over the structure of its games. Similar to narrative branching point and click games, the developer typically features the protagonist (or protagonists) making a series of decisions that affect the overarching story. While the stories may be well written, the overall gameplay experience revolves around little more than quick-time events. This feature is a place of contention for some critics and players, as characters can permanently die during a playthrough because of a QTE. It is especially prevalent in Detroit: Become Human, as one slip-up could have lasting effects on a chosen character.
According to a listing on Hitmarker, Quantic Dream is currently hiring a new senior writer for its next AAA game. The listing describes the game in production as an action-adventure game. This information follows the developer’s track record of interactive cinematic gameplay; Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human are all categorized as action-adventure titles. The listing doesn’t state that the game will be a PlayStation exclusive like the previous three Quantic Dream games at release. This is because the developer went independent in 2020.
The developer frequently works with well-known actors and actresses, such as Willem Defoe and Elliot Page in Beyond: Two Souls, as well as Grey’s Anatomy’s Jesse Williams in Detroit: Become Human. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the studio's next game features another high-profile actor as the star. Although the question of who the actor might be is an engaging one, considering the swath of Hollywood actors debuting in games in recent years.
Whatever Cage and his team have in the works, there is no way to know how much progress Quantic Dream has made at this time. Detroit: Become Human was released five years after Beyond: Two Souls, which was only three years after Heavy Rain. Based on those timeframes, the game could release anywhere between next year and 2023. Regardless, the developer’s penchant for stunning graphical quality and facial animations should excite any fan looking forward to a Quantic Dream game on next-gen hardware.
