Elder Scrolls Online's Customizable Companions Explained By Developer

Next month, the anticipated companion system will debut in The Elder Scrolls Online as part of the Blackwood expansion. The upcoming chapter belongs to the year-long Gates of Oblivion adventure, which focuses on defeating Mehrunes Dagon, Daedric God of Destruction.

The year-long adventure, The Elder Scrolls Online: Gates of Oblivion, was officially revealed back in January via a spectacular cinematic trailer. The video introduced the story’s major antagonist, Mehrunes Dagon, who also was the main villain in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. This time, 800 years prior to the events of the fourth major TES game, the powerful Daedric Prince is also planning dangerous schemes that threaten the very existence of Tamriel.

The upcoming Blackwood expansion, which is set to release at the beginning of June as part of the Gates of Oblivion adventure, will introduce a companion system to The Elder Scrolls Online. This new mechanic has been recently explained by the development team at Zenimax Online Studios in a dedicated blog post. According to a lengthy preview, the main goal is to provide players with combat support from trusty allies that will always stay by adventurers’ sides. Companions can take any particular role on the battlefield and can be flexibly configured to match gamers’ strategic needs. Their appearance and gear are also fully customizable, and interestingly, NPC allies can even be assigned a chosen mount. As part of the rapport function, players’ actions will have consequences influencing their relationships with companions.

Revealed so far are two characters, Mirri Elendis and Bastian Hallix, who can be unlocked by completing new quests included in the Blackwood expansion. While the companion system is only expected to arrive next month, the expansion’s prologue was available for players to enjoy back in April. For two weeks, anyone was able to give the base game along with the Blackwood expansion a try. It was the perfect opportunity for newcomers to get acquainted with the popular MMORPG, while ESO’s veterans were given a chance to explore a slice of new content two months before its official release.

While it’s obviously exciting to see the anticipated addition of a proper companion system to The Elder Scrolls Online, it is worth noting that NPC allies have always been a part of major TES releases from day one. Considering that ESO’s original release was seven years ago, it’s surprising that one of the franchise’s signature mechanics is arriving this late. Still, better late than never, as the addition of trusty allies will definitely make solo exploration of the game’s world a much more pleasurable activity.
