While Fable's playable heroes of Oakvale, Bower Lake, and Brightwall take center stage, every good open-world action RPG finds direction from its non-playable characters and its story. With even Fable 4's release date still unknown, there’s no way to verify if it will include any returning characters, but there are some fan favorites that would merit a comeback.
It’s been more than 10 years since Fable 3, and numerous RPGs have hit the market in that time. The qualities that made fans love Fable back then are still echoed in its best characters. Fable 3’s Ben Finn is a prime example: a stouthearted rogue with a heart of gold who keeps the adventure fresh with witty banter. This vagabond-turned-soldier is always great for a laugh, regaling the player with jabs and sardonic comments.
Reaver compliments the exaggerated eccentricity of Fable 2 in much the same way. He’s a self-indulgent profiteer who manages his industry with unbridled narcissism and an utter disregard for life. Reaver’s egomaniacal attitude and audacious one-liners color the story with shock value and humor, spicing up evil playthroughs with his trademark sarcasm and debauchery. Immoral characters like the gang members of Red Dead Redemption bring lots of personality to a game, and Reaver pushes the good-versus-evil dichotomy that's always been a key component of Fable.
Unlike action RPGs such as Skyrim and Kingdoms of Amalur, Fable is all about morality. Treading more in the footsteps of BioWare contemporaries like Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, the Fable formula offers compelling, interesting characters for either alignment: For every Reaver, there must also be a Page. Self-taught, strong-willed, and fiercely devoted to her cause, Fable 3's Page appeals to the player for wholly different reasons than Reaver, and Fable is all about contrasting options.
Friendly faces from previous games would be a bright spot, but it’s often better when those faces are old enemies seeking retribution for foiled plans of the past. The original game's villain, Jack of Blades, is one of the most popular characters in the Fable series - a dangerous man with origins shrouded in mystery. When Jack crosses the player's path, it means serious business. Bringing him back into the picture is a ripe opportunity for developer Playground Games to profit off the gravitas and intense boss fights he brought to to the first Fable.
The Fable franchise has long differed from other games in the genre, with its quirkiness and personality, and the characters who made the biggest splash of all deserve to return in Fable 4. Offbeat humor, morality, adventure, and mystery are the cornerstones of Fable, and these faces epitomize the strong foundation on which the series was built. In the end, Reaver and Page are more than just fan favorites; they’re a means of personifying the bigger picture of what Fable is all about.
