Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart's Dodge Mechanic Has A Big Flaw

Just about everything shown so far of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has looked great, but there's a flaw with its new dodge mechanic that's hard to ignore. For some reason, Ratchet and Rivet's side-dodge spawns a visual effect trail, and it has the potential to make combat more difficult for the wrong reasons.

Rift Apart has several new mobility options, including a simple dodge mechanic. For the first time in the series, players will be able to dodge side-to-side to avoid damage, in combination with the game's traditional strafing mechanic. The dodge will likely be a welcomed addition to Ratchet & Clank gameplay, but it features a visual trail effect could become a major irritation, showing several copies of Ratchet or Rivet lagging behind them as they dodge (with no noticeable difference in opacity).

Early previews for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart have showcased hectic combat scenarios that will require players to master the game's mobility. With so much already happening on the screen at once, the dodge trail only serves to add unnecessary visual clutter. Perhaps it won't be so prominent in the final game, but there's no real reason for it to be there in the first place.

Last August, when Insomniac Games first showed off an extended demo for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the trail effect wasn't present. There doesn't appear to be a specific purpose for its addition, so it's likely just part of the game's artistic vision, but it could end up only frustrating players. At the very least, it should be treated like motion blur, where players are given the option to shut it off. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart's accessibility options are extensive, so adding one to disable it would be an ideal way to address the problem.

Rift Apart has looked more impressive with each showing, and Insomniac's recent work on the Spider-Man games has only added to fan expectations. The game promises to be the first true test of the PlayStation 5's power and is setting itself up to be one of the year's biggest releases. It may seem like a small problem, but the dodge trail effect could become a significant annoyance, detracting from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart's overall quality. It likely won't ruin the game entirely, but it's noticeable enough that it should be addressed in some way.
