Spiral Director Wants To Reboot Leprechaun, Lionsgate Doesn’t Believe Him

Spiral: From the Book of Saw director, Darren Lynn Bousman, wants to reboot the Leprechaun franchise but unfortunately Lionsgate doesn't believe him. The Leprechaun franchise is a series of horror/comedy films that started with the original Leprechaun in 1993, which featured Warwick Davis as the title character alongside a then-unknown Jennifer Aniston. The series currently has eight films, which were all panned by critics leading to four of the films holding a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Bousman knows his way around the horror world, having directed four Saw films and various others, such as Mother's Day. This makes him seem like a good candidate to take on a reboot, though, outside the Saw franchise, his films haven't seen much success with critics or wide audiences. Over the last few weeks, Spiral has helped bring the Saw franchise to over a billion dollars worldwide. However, it's still not bringing in the box office numbers the studio was hoping for, which may impact Bousman's future projects if the studio already isn't taking him seriously.

While speaking with Comicbook, Bousman discussed how the studio flat out doesn't believe him when he brings it up, saying, "I think they think I'm f**king with them." He first approached them about rebooting Leprechaun while working on Saw II, stating, "I was 24 years old, now I'm 42, and I'm still f**king talking about it." With a passion for the project that spans almost twenty years, it's clear that Bousman is very serious about tackling Leprechaun, even if he can't convince the studio. Check out what Bousman said below:

They do not take me seriously about it, I think they think I'm f**king with them, so much so that I had a friends and family screening the Wednesday before [Spiral] came out and one of the execs walked over to me and said, 'Are you f**king with us? Are you serious? I was like, 'How many more times do I have to say it, I started talking about it during Saw II. I was 24 years old, now I'm 42, and I'm still f**king talking about it. That is the longest-running joke in the world if I'm joking.' No, I absolutely want to do the Leprechaun franchise, and since I've been saying it, they've redone it four times without me. You know what, I don't know what to say at this point, there's only so many times you can beg.

Bousman talked about his love of horror/comedy saying, "My favorite subgenre of horror is fun horror movies that are just fun and you smile and you high-five in theaters." While he clearly understands what the Leprechaun films should entail, having seen the franchise continue on in various installments has frustrated him. After praising the ridiculous and over-the-top nature of the films, he seemed exasperated, saying, "What else are you gonna do with it?"

The most recent installment in the Leprechaun franchise was 2018's Leprechaun Returns, which features the best critical rating of the series while still being poorly received. Given that, Lionsgate may be looking to give the franchise another go with someone who loves the films, especially since the series has never laid dormant for long. With titles like Leprechaun in the Hood and Leprechaun 4: In Space, the series is open to insane iterations, and Bousman's previous work shows that he's not afraid to tackle bizarre subjects; most notably with Repo! The Genetic Opera. With Bousman's persistence and absolute enthusiasm for taking on the franchise, it may be time for the executives at Lionsgate to start believing.
