The Flash: Cisco's Carlos Valdes & Wells' Tom Cavanagh Exits Explained

The Flash season 7 is saying goodbye to two original cast members as Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon), and Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells/Reverse-Flash) will be exiting the Arrowverse drama. Whenever big shows like The Flash reach their seventh or eighth seasons, it's not uncommon for long-time cast members to leave the series. While The Flash season 8 is a go for next year, the series is getting a cast shake-up. After having been on the show since 2014, Valdes and Cavanagh are both set to leave The Flash in season 7. Valdes has played Cisco, Team Flash's master nerdy engineer who was the superhero Vibe until the fifth season. Besides playing Reverse-Flash, Cavanagh has played multiple iterations of Harrison Wells.

While they have been part of The Flash since the beginning, why are they departing the show after seven years? With most actors contracts, the networks usually sign talent anywhere between five-seven years, with the latter being the most common option. In Cavanagh's case, the actor was actually going to leave after The Flash season 6. But due to the global pandemic, production on the sixth season was halted, which is why Cavanagh was only in the first three episodes of the ongoing season. After The Flash season 7, episode 3, "Mother," Cavanagh has not been credited in the main credits as his latest Harrison left. For Valdes, it seems that he is just finishing out his seven-year contract and ready to move on to new creative opportunities.

Creatively, The Flash has focused less on Cisco while they have continued to introduce one new Harrison after another. During The Flash season 6, the Arrowverse brought in Chester Runk and Allegra Garcia as new members of Team Flash, with both actors getting upped to series regulars for season 7. Perhaps one of the reasons why Cisco and Wells have been lesser focused characters is because the writers knew that Valdes and Cavanagh were ready to exit the series. That would explain why Allegra and Chester were involved with more storylines, as they fill the void that Cisco and Wells will leave when the actors depart this year.

What is now a big mystery though, since Valdes is leaving, is whether or not Kamilla Hwang will be sticking around for The Flash season 8. Unless they break up, which the current season hasn't given any indication to, Kamilla may leave the show as well. While Cisco and Harrison's endings are being kept under wrap, it does seem like they will at least have endings that will leave the door open, as showrunner Eric Wallace stated that they're welcome to guest in the future. It is also unclear whether or not The Flash season 8 will introduce or upgrade new characters to full-time status.

It's worth noting that The Flash season 7 will be introducing Jordan Fisher as the Arrowverse's Bart Allen, a.k.a. Impulse, in the 150th episode/episode 17. With Jessica Parker Kennedy also set to return as Nora West-Allen, a.k.a. XS, perhaps next season may have Iris and Barry's kids around on a more regular basis. Since Cavanagh is leaving, this might pave the way for Matt Letscher to return to the Arrowverse as the real Reverse-Flash, as the original Eobard Thawne hasn't been on the show for a few years now. But nevertheless, it will be bittersweet to see Cisco Ramon and Tom Cavanagh leaving The Flash, after seven long years.
