The Office: 10 Unpopular Opinions About Michael Scott, According To Reddit

As Michael was the heart of the show for seven full seasons, The Office changed completely after he left. Instead of being led by the childish but well-meaning bumbling boss, the show shifted into a more ensemble piece, as recurring characters were thrust to the front and center.

Michael Scott’s absence was the catalyst for the show’s paradigm shift, which in itself was the cause of so many unpopular opinions. And on top of that, whether it’s his love interests or his general personality, there are so many fans that go against the general consensus when it comes to Dunder Mifflin’s leading man.

10 The Show Was Still Great After Michael Left

One thing that is almost unanimous among fans of The Office is that the show massively dropped in quality after Michael left, as there was a revolving door of Branch managers, and the story was jumping around all over the place. But one Redditor argues that it was still great after Michael resigned from Dunder Mifflin, giving specific credit to Robert California.

However, while the show might not have been great in seasons 8 and 9, there are still a lot of things to love, including Dwight finally becoming manager.

9 Michael Is Mean To Dwight

This particular Redditor notes that Michael is way too mean to Toby, but that isn’t exactly a hot take, and it’s very well documented that it was Michael who led Toby to lose his full head of hair. However, the Redditor goes even further by saying that Dwight, Michael’s closest ally, was a victim of bullying from his boss.

But though there were many times where Michael might have taken advantage of Dwight’s loyalty, there were other times when Dwight tried to get Michael into trouble too. If he ever had a sense that there was an opportunity for promotion, Dwight would drop Michael in a heartbeat.

8 The First Season Is Too Michael Focused

On the flip side of the show going downhill because Michael was completely absent, this user claims that the first season failed due to featuring too much of Michael.

The show is so beloved for all of the zany recurring characters like Meredith, Creed and so many others, but they had such little screen time in season one. The first season is known for being completely different from the rest of the series, and though Michael acted totally different in season 1, it’s just as easy to blame Jim and Pam for there being too little of the recurring characters.

7 Holly Deserved Better

Out of all of the office relationships in the show, whether it’s the sometimes irritating Jim and Pam, the toxic Ryan and Kelly, or the completely incompatible Dwight and Angela, there was one couple that reigned supreme.

Michael and Holly seemed perfect for each other, but one Redditor is alone in thinking that Holly deserved better. The couple shared a completely unique and bizarre sense of humor, and they were always supportive of each other, even if it meant having to attempt a long-distance relationship, whereas the other couples on the show are all so selfish.

6 His Intelligence Is Inconsistent

One Redditor is quick to point out that as the series went on, Michael’s intelligence became more inconsistent. This unpopular opinion holds the most weight, as with all of the characters becoming more and more exaggerated with each consecutive season, Michael would often be written as an overly dumb person.

At one point, Michael didn’t even know what a surplus was, which is shocking considering he was the branch manager of Dunder Mifflin. But when the situation called for it, he’d be a genius, such as when he convinced Dunder Mifflin to buy his paper company, which was worth nothing.

5 He’s Too Cringy

With Michael being so needy for his employees to like him, not everyone believes his efforts to make them laugh are that great. A select few think that Michael is way too cringy and that his scenes are worth skipping altogether. But the thing is, Michael’s level of cringe and the train wrecks that are his meetings are what makes him so funny.

The character is supposed to be cringy, and all of his borderline offensive alter egos, whether it’s Michael Klump or Prison Mike, are supposed to make fans feel awkward, since that’s the whole joke.

4 Michael Had No Character Development In The Whole Series

Outside of the first season, in which every actor including Steve Carrell was still experimenting with their characters, the series saw the characters all much more accomplished. And up until the final season, everybody, including minor characters like Creed, had their own development. However, one Redditor posits that Michael didn’t have any character development whatsoever.

To the user’s credit, Michael rarely learned from his mistakes, and seemingly got dumber as the show progressed. However, there have been many accomplished moments where Michael proved that he is mature, including standing up to Jan and being a father figure to Erin.

3 Holly And Michael Were The Worst Couple On The Show

Not only do some think that Holly deserved better than Michael, but some will go as far as to say that they were actually the worst couple on the show. The user cites that it was the least fun relationship that Michael ever had, but it’s almost the exact opposite.

Jan used Michael and he was utterly depressed when he was with her, and he also knowingly dated a married woman. So of all the relationships the manager has been in, Holly is easily seen as the most fun out of all of them.

2 Michael Didn’t Deserve To Be Hit By Pam

In what was another relationship of Michael’s that ended terribly, the manager started dating Pam’s mom. After Michael broke up with Pam’s mom after finding out how old she was, Pam hit him across the face as hard as she could.

What made it worse was that it was in the parking lot with all of the colleagues watching. But this user thinks that Michael’s actions didn’t measure up to the punishment, and considering how many downvotes it has, it’s certainly an unpopular opinion.

1 The Seasons Without Michael Are Better

Though some fans believe the show was just as great after Michael left in season 7, an even smaller minority goes even further by claiming that the seasons without Michael are better.

This couldn’t be further from the general criticisms of the show from fans, as season 9 is by far the least liked of all the seasons due to how the characters do things that are extraordinarily uncharacteristic of them. However, season 8 is still a lot of fun, especially when it comes to the revolving door of oddball branch managers.
