Even though Bonnie wasn't the main character on The Vampire Diaries, she easily gained the love of many fans who watched the show. Everybody loves a powerful witch who uses her powers for good, and that's exactly who Bonnie was. Her journey was complicated and difficult since Bonnie died multiple times on the show. But, in the end, she was free to live her life the way she wanted and to travel and see the world.
In the books, though, Bonnie is much different, just like many of The Vampire Diaries' main and supporting characters. All major aspects of her character such as her personality and her powers were altered for the show, which makes it even more exciting to discover the differences between Bonnie in the books and Bonnie in the show.
10 Bonnie Looks Much Different
Bonnie in the show has very little in common with her book counterpart looks-wise. In the books, Bonnie is the smallest member of her group of friends. She's short and delicate, has thick red hair and pale skin, which is very different from the way she appears in the series. She's also of similar height to her friends, which makes her look the same age, not younger like she seemed in the books.
9 Her Character Is Also Altered
It's just not the way Bonnie looks, but also the way she acts which changed on the show; Bonnie is initially unsure what to do with her newfound powers, but she quickly grows to be a respectable, confident, and powerful witch.
In the books, Bonnie is much more timid, shy, almost passive, and other people—Elena included—end up having to save her on more than one occasion. She still connects to her powers, but she never becomes quite as independent as her show counterpart.
8 A Different Surname
This is a small detail, but it still demonstrates that the show's creators took some creative liberties with Bonnie's character as a whole. In the show, Bonnie's surname is, of course, Bennett, and it's a well-known name in the supernatural worlds since the Bennett witches have a long line of powerful women. In the books, though, Bonnie's last name is McCullough, which is well suited to the way her appearance is described in the books.
7 Dating Damon
Bonnie and Damon built a surprising friendship on the show. It helped that they were stuck in 1994 together and needed to learn how to get along, but they were never as close on the show as they ended up being in the books.
Damon could be often ruthless, but he was protective of Bonnie and called her his little redbird. Bonnie, in return, felt drawn to Damon as well, and they started dating as a result. Some of the fans wished they would also date on the show, but it never happened.
6 Doesn't Like Caroline That Much
Bonnie and Caroline seem to be good friends on the show, maybe even better than Caroline and Elena. They don't always get along, such as when Bonnie refused to talk to Caroline after she had become a vampire. But, mostly, they get along just fine.
That's not what happens in the books, though. Caroline is openly antagonistic toward Elena, and, since Elena and Bonnie are so close in the books, Bonnie herself isn't that fond of Caroline.
5 Her Magic Powers Are Different
Even though Bonnie attained her magic powers both in the books and on the show, their nature differs. In the books, Bonnie is a psychic, and she has druids ancestors. On the show, though, Bonnie is a witch, and she comes from a long line of witches who lived in Salem.
The show at least had a nod to her book powers. When Bonnie met her friends in the first episode, she joked that she was a psychic and she predicted Elena would have a happier future.
4 Her Family Situation
Just like Elena and Caroline, Bonnie's family is also different in the books. The show's Bonnie doesn't live with her mom since her mom, Abby, left and later became a vampire. Bonnie also doesn't have any siblings on the show.
However, in the books, she has both of her parents, as well as an older sister named Mary. Mary works as a nurse, and she helps Bonnie and her friends on more than one occasion.
3 Her Love Life
Other than dating Damon in the books but not on the show, there are other considerable differences to Bonnie's love life. For example, she doesn't date Elena's brother Jeremy in the books simply because Elena has no brother Jeremy but a little sister named Margaret.
Bonnie also doesn't date Enzo in the books. On the other hand, and this didn't happen in the show, she had a brief fling with Matt Honeycutt, aka Matt Donovan, in the books.
2 Drawn To Darkness
Bonnie has a sweet innocent appearance in the books, but she's actually drawn to all things supernatural and to the darkness. She seems fascinated by things such as death, and the notion of vampires doesn't scare her as it would most people.
However, the show's Bonnie doesn't feel this sentiment, and she ends up hating vampires for quite some time. It's difficult to blame her for that, as Bonnie lost her beloved grandmother because of vampires, to name just one reason why she dislikes them so much.
1 She Can Do So Much More
Bonnie is one of the most powerful characters on the show, but she actually has an even wider range of powers in the books. Some of the powers she demonstrated in the books include telepathy, aura reading, palm reading, or empathy. All of that made her a force to be reckoned with in the books.
