Even in a world so filled with dangers and supernatural threats of various kinds as The Vampire Diaries is, there's still room for love and friendship. Without the help of their friends, the characters wouldn't be able to survive as often as they do. For example, it was Bonnie who sacrificed her life more than once to help her friends. And she was the one who came up with a solution to Kai's curse and was able to wake Elena up from her magic slumber.
However, some friendships on the show, whether they've become iconic or not, were a surprise for the fans. That could either be because they didn't appear in the books or because it might look like the friends have nothing in common.
10 Klaus And Stefan
When Klaus first showed up in person on The Vampire Diaries, there was no strong connection between him and Stefan. However, the subsequent episodes revealed that they were close buddies in the 1920s, where they spent a lot of time together.
Klaus was later forced to suppress Stefan's memories because he and Rebekah were running from their murderous father. He tried to rekindle his friendship with Stefan in the 21st century but it didn't take and they mostly stood against each other. It was still surprising to see that they were friendly at any point.
9 Damon And Bonnie
Damon and Bonnie dated in the books. However, the show saw their relationship go in a different direction. Initially, it looked like these two could never be friends.
Bonnie strongly disliked vampires and she even stopped talking to Caroline for a while when she learned Caroline had transformed into one. But over time, Bonnie relented and she and Damon grew closer. They forged a strong bond while they were trapped in 1994.
8 Damon And Caroline
Speaking of Damon's surprise friendships, there's also his complicated relationship with Caroline. She fancied Damon right when she first met him. But Damon only started dating Caroline to break Stefan and Elena up. He also fed on her and used her as his personal blood bank.
When Caroline became a vampire, her memories came back and she confronted Damon about the way he treated her. They eventually reconciled but it was tough for Caroline to forget what happened so many fans didn't think she and Damon would ever get along, let alone become friends.
7 Elijah And Elena
While not a typical friendship, there's no denying that Elijah liked and respected Elena. And she felt the same way. Besides their one kiss (when Elijah thought she was Katherine), their relationship stayed on a friendly level.
Not everyone thought they would ever become close since Elijah was originally Elena's enemy. He came to Mystic Falls when Rose let him know she had found a doppelgänger. But even though Elijah threatened Elena at first, they later overcame their initial animosity.
6 Klaus And Caroline
Klaus and Caroline could have become a couple - if circumstances were different. But instead, they went on to become friends - somewhat. Klaus was enchanted by Caroline and while he tormented her friends, he tried to win her over. She eventually admitted she also had feelings for him but it never led anywhere.
However, they parted ways on good terms and were still there for each other like friends should be. Klaus even donated a significant amount of money to the Salvatore Boarding School and he sent a letter with this news to Caroline.
5 Stefan And Katherine
After everything Katherine had done to him and Damon, it would be understandable if Stefan hated Katherine. And he did... for a while anyway. Katherine was a major villain in the second season but when she became a human again much later, Stefan was sympathetic toward her.
He even saved her life at one point when Katherine planned to take her own life. Stefan might have been responsible for Katherine dying again in the end but for some time, they formed an unexpected friendship.
4 Matt And Tyler
This friendship might seem like a given but it doesn't really make that much sense. For one, Matt and Tyler have very little in common, other than the fact they both played the same sport. Their backgrounds were completely different (Tyler was a rich kid, Matt had to work hard to make ends meet), and they also approached and treated people around them differently.
Tyler had positive sides to him as well but more often than not, he wasn't all that sympathetic. It's also dubious that Matt let Tyler date Vicki despite how Tyler treated her and didn't say anything even though he was otherwise protective of his family.
3 Damon And Alaric
Damon and Alaric are among one of the most popular friendships in The Vampire Diaries. Mostly because it looks like they liked spending time with each other and had a real bond. Damon was clearly upset when Alaric died and grieved his friend. However, their friendship beat the odds since originally it looked like these two could never be friends.
After all, when Alaric came to Mystic Falls as a teacher, his real goal was to find the vampire who killed his wife. Alaric strongly disliked vampires, yet even after discovering Damon was the one responsible for changing his wife into a vampire, they still became friends.
2 Elena And Rebekah
It's not as strong a friendship as some others on this list but it's difficult to overlook nonetheless. When Rebekah first met Elena, she soon grew to hate her. That was most notably because of Stefan who used to love Rebekah but was now head over heels with Elena.
Rebekah tried to kill Elena several times and she was responsible for Elena's car driving off the bridge which led to Elena's transformation into a vampire. Rebekah also coaxed Elena into admitting she had feelings for Damon in front of Stefan. Despite all this, Elena and Rebekah formed a buddy duo when they were looking for Katherine. This only confirms the rule that a mutual enemy makes friends even of former enemies.
1 Damon And Stefan
Finally, one of the most surprising friendships was the deep bond that gradually evolved between Damon and Stefan. When Damon first appeared, it looked like he wanted nothing more than to make his brother's life a living hell (and lure Elena away from Stefan). But the two brothers eventually made amends and grew much closer than ever before. In the end, Stefan even sacrificed his life to save Damon and give him a new shot at life.
However, their relationship was much more strenuous in the books, and even when they were forced to work together, they were often at each other's throats. Damon was also much more merciless toward Stefan in the books. So if the books' fans expected the show to create the same relationship between Damon and Stefan, they were in for a surprise.
