ThunderCats Fans Aren't Ready For What's Planned Says Movie Writer

ThunderCats fans are not prepared for what Adam Wingard is planning for the movie, according to its co-writer Simon Barrett. Fresh off of Godzilla vs. Kong, Adam Wingard's next project will be a live-action adaptation of ThunderCats, the popular cartoon series from the 1980s that follows a group of feline-like humanoid aliens from the planet Thundera. Wingard's past installment in Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise debuted to great success, despite its release this past March during the Covid-19 pandemic. The film grossed $427 million at the worldwide box office, breaking several pandemic records on its way to becoming the third highest-grossing film of 2021.

Riding off this success, Wingard will be tackling another Japanese property with some franchise-starting potential. A ThunderCats movie has been stuck in development for quite some time now, hitting multiple roadblocks along the way. The project took a major step forward this year when Wingard signed on to direct and co-write a ThunderCats movie with his frequent collaborator, Simon Barret, for Warner Bros. Originally created by Tobin "Ted" Wolf, ThunderCats was a hit during its run from 1985 to 1989, leading to a video game and various comics. Soon, a live-action ThunderCats will be seen on the silver screen, yet it may not be what fans are expecting.

Talking to Comic Book, ThunderCats co-writer, Simon Barrett, says fans are not at all prepared for what Wingard has planned. The director has been a life-long fan of the animated series, so naturally he has been thinking about a movie adaptation for a long time. However, it was not until he was doing post-production work on the Hollow Earth scenes in Godzilla vs. Kong that he finally figured out how to make a ThunderCats movie work. Now, Barrett is teasing what Wingard has in store:

I will say this, our ThunderCats adaptation is going to be really, really cool. I don't think people are at all prepared for how long Adam Wingard has spent thinking about ThunderCats. They are not ready for Adam's ThunderCats movie. It is going to destroy.

Barrett's most recent film, Seance, which he wrote and directed, will debut in theaters and on-demand this Friday. Though Wingard was not involved in his upcoming horror film, the two have collaborated frequently in the past on horror films, like 2017's Blair Witch sequel, the slasher, You're Next, and The Guest. Since ThunderCats is clearly a passion project for Wingard, it will certainly be intriguing to hear more about what he and Barrett are planing for the movie adaptation.

After Star Wars rewrote the book on tie-in toys and merchandising opportunities in 1977, ThunderCats was one of many properties in the 1980s to capitalize on the growing trend. If Wingard's ThunderCats film can do the same, it could become another long-running and lucrative franchise for Warner Bros.
