What An Animal Crossing Expansion Pass Could Add | Screen Rant

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has seen several large updates since its release more than a year ago, and it seems likely the title will continue to expand. But many fans have become bored of its usual monthly events, raising questions of what Nintendo can do to keep the game relevant - and what a potential Animal Crossing expansion pass could bring to the table.

Two other major Nintendo Switch games, Pokémon Sword and Shield and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, have used paid expansion passes to roll out additional content, but Animal Crossing has so far relied on small, free content drops. With events beginning to repeat and fans calling for more significant updates, it seems increasingly likely the same approach will be required to make New Horizons exciting again.

Common asks from fans include new villagers, additional island space for expanded building, more events, and more items. Datamining has recently suggested a major Animal Crossing expansion could indeed be on the way, but it would likely be difficult to satisfy all these wants in a single DLC. Perhaps Nintendo would be better off following the Pokémon and BOTW approach, releasing several DLC packs via a paid New Horizons expansion pass.

Perhaps the first big Animal Crossing expansion pass DLC could address the most pressing issues, like expanding the island, giving players new facilities to build, and increasing the number of villagers able to live on each island. This would allow players more ways to customize their towns and, thus, more freedom and creativity. Subsequent parts of the expansion pass could introduce a significant amount of new Animal Crossing villagers, items, and furniture. Nintendo could also add small gameplay changes, such as more interaction opportunities with villagers or new special visitors, either of which would make the day-to-day experience of the base game more interesting.

Given the amount of furniture items and clothing from previous games that have yet to make an appearance in New Horizons, Nintendo could even make one part of the expansion pass centered around returning content, bringing back favorite items and missing Animal Crossing crossover villagers. While there is no word yet on the truth of Animal Crossing: New Horizons' future additions, at least some of these possibilities seem likely.
