5 Things About Sex Education That Feel American (& 5 That Are Feel British)

Sex Education has been a huge success for Netflix since its launch, and while the series is set in England, there's no denying that there are elements that feel far more American. There's an interesting feel to the entire show, from the colors used, the consistently perfect weather, and the way that the school is run that sometimes feels more like an American high school movie.

However, while there are definitely some American elements pumped into this show, the core of it is quintessentially British. There are specific elements of it outside of the fact that the characters are English that makes this show feel like it belongs in Britain, but which parts of the series feel right for each nation?

10 American: The School Lockers

Every student having their own locker is something that might be common in America, but it certainly isn't in Britain. Because of that, this is one element that is absolutely geared towards that audience in a bid to make the show feel more accessible.

It's like watching High School Musical, or The Breakfast Club, with this giving that feel which helps create quite a fun dynamic within the school, making everything look as vibrant as possible.

9 British: The School Lessons

The lessons themselves are as British as it gets. From the way the teachers put out the subject to how the students actually behave in class, this is something that the show got spot on, particularly within the science lessons.

Having worksheets to write on is something most British students can relate with, and considering that this is a school setting, this needed to get grounded down in reality.

8 American: The Non-Uniform

When it comes to how the characters all dress when they head to school, this very much feels like it belongs in America. Traditionally in Britain, the majority of schools have a strict uniform code, which means that all of the students wear the same clothes when they go in.

That is something that has thrown a lot of British people when watching this show because they typically expect to see schools in that way. However, that's less of a case in America, which is why that element of it feels a lot more like an American school at points.

7 British: Mr. Groff

Typically, when British schools are showcased on television and movies, the headteacher is often shown with a stiff upper lip and as somebody who will be quite strict. The reason for that is that it is how a lot of headteachers are, and that is why Mr. Groff is quintessentially British.

But as well as that, his entire approach of being reserved is often something that is associated with British people, which is why he's such a great character to watch.

6 American: The Sports

If this was truly focused on a British school then the sports situation would be drastically different. In this show, the characters are often seen throwing around American footballs, wearing Letterman jackets, and being part of big swim teams in massive pools.

In Britain, the majority of schools do not have a swimming pool facility, and American Football wouldn't be getting played. Instead, they'd be part of the soccer team or they would be playing rugby, with this element leaning towards the American audience more.

5 British: The Caravans

Caravan parks are something that is quintessentially British, with tons of these locations being found all around for people to stay in. Often, people head to these areas for a short break away, but this particular area is where Maeve lives, and that is the situation for plenty of people in Britain as well. The way they look and the manner in which are presented is spot on and helps to ground the show.

4 American: Huge Theatre Production

Some schools in Britain do put on shows with their drama classes, but there aren't many that do it to the level that Sex Education does. The huge production that Lily comes up with is something that no British student has experienced, from the brass band playing live to the lights and costumes, it isn't realistic for most.

While this may not happen in every American school either, the manner in which they are typically showcased on television and movies is what makes it feel that way. This is what non-American's have been conditioned to accept, and that's why this feels similar.

3 British: The Funfair

During one episode, several of the characters end up hanging out at a local funfair, and this is a moment that would absolutely happen in Britain. Everything about the funfair from the different toys that were available to win to the games that could be played felt right.

It's the type of moment that truly did feel quintessentially British and is one of the reasons why the show works so well. Its ability to get big moments, such as this correct, helps to make the show have a real charm all the way throughout it.

2 American:  The House Parties

House parties take place in Britain just as regularly as America. However, the scale of those parties is never on the same level. The manner in which the parties happen in Sex Education feels like something from American Pie that Stiffler would be proud of.

They always seem to have hundreds of people and mass chaos is caused, which isn't normally the case at all in Britain. The parties have huge setups with DJs and the works, which isn't something most British people would expect.

1 British: Jean's Night Out

Jean's friendship with Maureen is one that comes out of nowhere but ends up being a lot of fun. It all blossoms on a night out that is very British, from the local pub setting that is quite quiet but still sees people getting very drunk to the way they head to a nightclub to dance along with the music.

This is something that works and is easy to relate with for older audiences watching the show, which is what is so good about it. The scene is fantastic and sums up Britain's drinking culture quite nicely.
