Among Us Developer Shows Off New Voting Screen (& Roasts a Troll)

The developers of Among Us, Innersloth, have shown off a comparison of the deduction game's new voting screen in comparison to the old one, all while managing to deliver a stinging clapback on Twitter in the process. The voting screen was overhauled to support the game's new 15-player lobby sizes, one of several major changes coming to the sleeper hit indie game.

Bigger lobbies were added as a part of June 15's Anniversary Update. That release also gave Among Us a "cleaner" art style and a new kill screen menu, reminding players who died between rounds. Because of the potential for confusion among the living, Innersloth also introduced new crewmate colors Rose, Gray, Tan, Coral, and Banana to the game's growing palette. The new art style is partly in service of making characters easier to animate, and will further help when the game transitions to 4K-capable Xbox and PlayStation consoles later in 2021. No solid release date for either port has been set, but Among Us is currently on Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.

The updated voting screen, shared via the official Among Us Twitter account, is wider with smaller nametags for each player, enabling three columns of five. True to the original version, an election-style "I Voted" sticker is slapped on each nametag as votes come in. Aesthetically, the screen now resembles an older Samsung smartphone, as hinted by its pill-shaped physical home button, whereas the previous version appears to have been designed more after Apple's iPad. Functionally, though, the two screens are identical.

However, an unexpected moment came when a Twitter user replied with, "What's the point of updating your game if literally nobody plays this." Innersloth answered back with "what's a god to a non-believer," earning over 2,000 likes as of this writing versus the troll's 73, which is quite the ratio for a game that supposedly has no interest behind it.

The Among Us account is one of the more vocal marketing mouthpieces on Twitter, endearing itself through a casual voice and regularly retweeting fan art from around the world. Other companies' Twitter presences are often more stiff, likely because of the risk of bad publicity. Though Among Us' player counts have indeed dropped since it became a viral sensation (according to PlayerCounter figures), but there can still be over 1 million players online simultaneously. It seems clear the game is far from dead, and Innersloth's strong social media presence is likely to thank for that in part.

Beyond Xbox and PlayStation ports, Innersloth is working on yet more feature additions for Among Us, with similarly indefinite release dates. These include a fifth map, achievements, cross-platform account linking, a Hide & Seek mode, and "new roles and ways to play," such as a Sheriff character. Continuing a focus on revenue-generating cosmetics, players will soon be able to buy custom visors for their characters, as well.
