Bob Odenkirk doesn't think Kim Wexler dies in the Better Call Saul series finale. Season 5 found Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill and Rhea Seehorn’s Kim Wexler at a crossroads in their relationship following a harrowing experience with the menacing Lalo. When Better Call Saul returns for season 6, things are bound to get interesting between the show’s lead characters as a new side of Kim seems about to reveal itself.
The sixth season of the acclaimed Breaking Bad spinoff is of course set to be its last, which means things are certain to get dramatic and perhaps even dark. One big question on Better Call Saul fans’ minds obviously is what will happen with Jimmy’s other alter ego Gene, who has been seen in flash-forwards throughout the course of the series. Many believe Gene ultimately dies, and there has even been a theory suggesting Walter White himself is the one who kills him. But while fans are definitely worried about Jimmy/Saul/Gene, they’re even more worried about Kim, who in season 5 went from lurking on the periphery of Jimmy’s schemes to being as deeply embroiled in danger as he ever was.
For his part Odenkirk says he doesn’t believe Kim is in actual danger of losing her life in the final season of Better Call Saul. Speaking to The Guardian, Odenkirk talked about not wanting to know what’s going to happen on the show ahead of time. “I like being surprised just like a viewer of the story. I have my own theories, but they’re just basically fan theories.” So Odenkirk doesn’t actually know how the story wraps up yet, but he does have a guess about Kim’s fate:
“I don’t think she dies. I think she’s in Albuquerque, and she’s still practicing law. He’s still crossing paths with her. To me, that would fuel his desire to be on billboards everywhere, because he wants her to see him."
Questions about Kim’s fate arise in part because the character did not exist on Breaking Bad, leaving open the possibility that she dies at some point during Better Call Saul’s story. Of course, it’s also possible that Kim survives the events of the show and simply breaks up with Jimmy and perhaps leaves town, which would explain why Saul Goodman never encountered her on Breaking Bad. Odenkirk himself now offers up an even more intriguing alternative, which is that Kim is still in Albuquerque during Breaking Bad and Jimmy/Saul is partly motivated in his hot shot lawyer activities by his ongoing feelings for her.
It remains to be seen how things play out for Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul season 6 but fans will no doubt continue being worried about her as Jimmy’s activities get them into more and more sticky situations. Of course, the season 5 finale suggested that Kim has actually been more of an active participant in the story than was previously revealed, and that her whole relationship with Jimmy might be part of her own long con. It will be fascinating to see how this all resolves as Better Call Saul heads toward a conclusion that could very well prove tragic for both of its lead characters.
