Every Time Keith David Has Voiced Spawn | Screen Rant

Here's every time Keith David has voiced the character of Spawn. Keith David made his movie debut as Childs in John Carpenter's The Thing and has amassed over 300 credits in the decades since. He's stolen movies like Platoon, Dead Presidents and Pitch Black, and recently played the title role in the hit TV drama Greenleaf. His distinctive tones have also seen him loan his voice to countless movies, shows and video games, including Gargoyles, Dissidia Final Fantasy and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2; he can even be heard on the Ice Cube track "Hood Mentality."

Probably one of his most famous voice over roles is HBO's Spawn from the 1990s. Spawn started as a comic series created by Todd McFarlane, which follows assassin Al Simmons. Al is killed on a mission but is given a chance to return to Earth by demon Malebolgia in exchange for his soul. The comic's eye-popping artwork, cool characters and dark themes made it a success, and it later received a cult live-action movie adaptation in 1997 starring Michael Jai White.

While the Spawn movie was a modest success, it received bad reviews and didn't spawn (pun intended) a movie franchise. Faring better was Todd McFarlane's Spawn, an adult-themed HBO animated show starring Keith David as the title demon. The series is easily the best adaptation of the comic to date, featuring great animation and performances, with the cast also including David's The Thing co-star Richard Dysart, Ming-Na Wen and Jennifer Jason Leigh. David is, of course, perfect casting as Spawn, with the show ultimately running for three seasons from 1997 to 1999.

The series ended on a cliffhanger that was meant to lead to a fourth season, and a sequel series called Spawn: The Animation was in development in the 2000s, but despite voice work with Keith David actually being recorded, the show wasn't produced. Todd McFarlane has stated that the material may end being used for a future Spawn animated project, but like his long-planned live-action movie reboot, there's little sign of it moving ahead at present.

After years of waiting, fans of Spawn finally got to hear Keith David back as the character's voice in Mortal Kombat 11. Spawn joined the game in "Kombat Pack 1" - alongside the likes of The Terminator and The Joker - and the actor once again proved he was the perfect choice for the role. David is on record as calling Spawn one of his favorite roles and that he'd play the role anytime, so hopefully - be it a revival of the HBO show or another incarnation - that will come to pass sometime soon.
